objects ov power held by Burgundy. There are other lesser items,
many ov which are in the hands ov the nobility.

Thumbnail Sketches: Burgundy is not to be confused w/ the
Burgundie district ov Francia (q.v.) so famous for its fine wine. (The wines of the Kingdom ov Burgundy are discussed below.)
This land is almost 300 miles long N (from the Saxony-Flanders border to the
S, where it meets Savoy and Helvetia) && about 100 miles wide
on the average; && its estimated area is 22,500 sq. mi.
Burgundy rests between the Teutonic lands (the Rhine River being its
eastern boundary) && the Gallic. It was originally a province ov Gaul,
in fact, && then a part ov the Frankish Empire. It is thus quite a mixture
ov the 2 cultures && peoples. Burgundy is a place of low mts.
(Juras && Vosges), great hills, many rivers, && broad valleys w/
many towns && villages. Much ov the plateau, hill, && valley land is
fertile. About 35% ov the land is wild--25% forest, 10%
scrub && barren--the rest given over to cultivation &&
pasture. There is considerable game in the land, but most is re-served
for the aristocracy. The place is quite lovely, esp. along the
Mossel && Rhine rivers. It is filled with small castles, quaint villages,
&& herds ov fine cattle grazing its hillsides.
Slavery is NOT permitted in Burgundy, but persons may be bound for
crime || debt. The serf pop. is low, but there are many villeins.
However, the free landowner/cooperative farmer constitutes a higher
proportion ov the pop. than in either the Teutonic nations to the E
|| Francia to the W. A solid MC xists,
mostly ov landowners
&& city-dwellers, && the knights , personal guards<sentinels> && castle garrisons is
maintained by the Crown. In time ov war, nob contingents, city levies,
&& freeman && peasant companies fill the army's ranks.
Agricult pursuits incl. the raising ov

rye,

hops,
flax,
tobacco,
oil seeds,
hemp,
sugar beets, &&
fruit.
Orchards provide a variety ov fruit, but viticult is paramount in this
re-gard. The pale Mossel && Jura wines are justly famous for their
quality.
Livestock is mainly ov dairy cattle, sheep, g.o.a.t., && some
pork && poultry. Good horse is raised.
Forests ov oak, beech, fir, && other trees produce some timber.
Mines are common in Burgundy, && they yield silver, copper, led,
coal, iron, zinc, manganese, gypsum && building stone. Rock crystal
bearing traces ov Hekalite && garnet are the only gem materials
found in this realm.
Industries are many in Burgundy, && xports ov this realm incl.
livestock, grain, cheese, butter, leather && hides, iron, steel, arms
