Quote:Died today in 1170: Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury; assassinated Quote:1170: Thomas Becket was murdered in the Canterbury Cathedral by four knights, all loyal to King Henry II "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" ~Henry II on Thomas Becket While Henry II did not order the death of Becket four of his knights took it upon themselves to rid him of the priest. All four knights were excommunicated by Pope Alexander III, to receive forgiveness they were ordered to serve 14 years in the Holy Lands. King Henry II made a public penance on 12 Jul 1174 at Becket's tomb. On 21 Feb 1173 Pope Alexander III canonised Thomas Becket as a Saint. Saint Thomas Becket is the patron saint of Exeter College, Oxford; Portsmouth; Arbroath Abbey; secular clergy. In 1538 Henry VIII ordered the destruction of Becket's bones and that all mention of his name be obliterated. Edward Grim's account: Hugh of Horsea "placed his foot on the neck of the holy priest and precious martyr, and, horrible to relate...scattered the brains and blood about the pavements, crying to the others, 'Let us away, knights; this fellow will arise no more."
