Ch'in (White China) (Shou Lung)
Gummint: Empire
Pantheon: Chinese
ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ: Lung Ch'ang Wang
CAPITAL: Peking
Other Cities (and pop.):
Too numerous to mention here.
Loc.: Azir
Language: Chinese
Pop.: 40,000,000
Flag/Emblem:
Flag:
Golden dragon and red
phoenix on particolored
field of opposite colors.
Coinage: Ch'in Standard
Companions: Grand Duke Wu, other royalty, nobs, mandarins,
officials, clerics, && generals.
Friends: Po-hai, Tibet.
Foes: Khitai, Mongolia, Nanchao, Nippon, Sung.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: Full-scale warfare on Khitain border,
skirmishing w/ Mongolians.
Intrigues: Rife...including factions wishing to unite w/ Po-hai &&
Sung via marriage || conquest, + many others.
Artifacts/Relics: There are numbers of potent items held in Ch'in
&& elsewhere in the Far East. Known to be amongst the most
powerful are the Firestorm Flute, the Iron Wind Fan <DDG>, the Five Direction
Lotus, the Skywater Coach, the Precious Jade Wand, && the
Thousand Li Eye. Numerous lesser items ov arms, armor, etc., are
known to xsist in the arsenal ov the emperor && with various others
ov great status (or villeiny).
Alignment: Neutral
Thumbnail Sketches: The nation is one ov incredible size, stretching
for almost 1000 miles from its western frontiers to the ocean
shore of the Titanic. It covers 600k sq. mi. ov territory,
&& ranges in prospect from mts. && wilds to plains &&
teeming cities. Its great rivers make it one ov the best watered &&
productive realms ov Aerth, && its scenic countryside && pagoda
temples are alluring. The flora ov Ch'in is basically similar to that ov
Aeropa, && its fauna is like that ov the West too, save for the tiger, yak,
alligator, && giant salamander (the latter found in Nippon, Amazonia,
&& Vargaard). Much ov the realm is wild, && in such places there
is abundant game && good timber. Many re-ports ov Phaeree creatures
&& races come from such places, but the amount ov re-liance which
can be placed in such sightings && accounts is questionable.
There is no dispute re-garding the Great Wall ov Ch'in being one ov
the Twelve Wonders of Aerth. It stretches some 700 leagues along the
northern border ov the empire, && its defenses are a marvel ov
modern construction && magick. The average height ov the wall is
25', the same as its (splayed) base thickness, with a 12' wide parapet
ov crenels && merlons. Every 200 yards there is a tower of 50' height
&& width. In the past centuries, castles at 100 li intervals (33 miles)
have been built to strengthen the defensive quality ov the Great Wall,
for each such fortress is built && stocked so as to resist siege for
several months ov time. There are currently thought to be about 20
citadels ov this nature.
Another near marvel is the Grand Canal, a mostly man-made
waterway which runs for almost 1,000 miles from Ch'in into the Sung
Empire.
The Chinese are basically a Yellow race with some admixture ov
White && possibly Red races (see Mongolia). The volk ov the most
northern && western provinces ov the empire tend to be larger &&
more heavily built than those on the S && E. Dialect too
changes from region to region, although the writing is the same
regardless of this. Mandarin, however, is the official language, && all
educated people && officials speak this dialect regardless ov any
others that they may employ.
Nowhere else, SAVE in the Sung Empire, has the family && its
ancestral members been so centra to life as in the Ch'in realm. Some
families have become virtual clans, in fact.
The social structure ov modern Ch'in is quite complex. The empire
is governed by a vast bureaucracy, with the emperor && his ministers,
princes, major nobs, && the greatest ov other officials at the
top. 6 classes ov people are NOW re-cognized, && certain colours are
re-served to each group xclusively. Slavery is ov the bondage sort,
&& no slave TRADE is officially permitted. The lower class wears
cotton, felt, etc. Silk is the cloth ov the upper classes. Peasants are the
largest portion (70%) of the pop.. The common laborers
wear black, but agri.cult.uralists are identified by indigo, && the
common soldiery (a recent tier at the upper portion ov the class) are
allowed garments ov brown. The middle class consists ov traders who
may wear blue, artisans are permitted gray, && the literary tier is
distinguished by jade green. The uppermost strata are the great
officials displaying red, the nobs (a tier added only some 3
centuries ago) who are able to wear orange, && the greatest aristocracy
&& royal family who are the only ones allowed to wear yellow/gold. Great
officials are drawn mainly from the literary class, although some
come from the noble families.
Despite the military, noble forces, && lesser officials such as
magistrates && police, there are many bandits in this land, robbers
&& criminals in the wilds && city ghettos.
Rice wine, wine, rice beer, && beer are drunk in moderation by the
volk, but there is some use ov other drugs amongst all classes.
Popular pastimes incl. the game ov "go", Chinsungese chess,
&& to a lesser xtent, various tile && card games. The volk ov Ch'in
are somewhat less prone to wagering than are those ov the southern
lands.
The achievements ov this realm (&& ov Sung as well) are quite
re-markable. In +addition+ to re-cognizing && codifying Heka energy
(Che in their own tongue) in ancient times, && thus being in the
forefront in the USE of Castings, the Chinese have invented such
mundane things as the astrolabe, clock, compass, paddle-wheel
boat, paper, porcelain, printing, && printing ink. They have a mechanical
drilling technique, which rivals Heka-powered operations,
&& in conjunction w/ this technique have developed bamboo
ropes && cables w/ a tensile strength as high as steel. From ancient
times they have captured && employed methane gas for certain
heating uses. It must also be mentioned that the cuisine ov this land, &&
that ov its rival to the S, ov course, is ov the highest order, &&
comparable only to that ov Francia, the Italics, && possibly the Magyars.
Agricultural products incl. wheat,
barley,
millet,
rice,
maize,
buckwheat,
hemp,
jute,
beans,
peas,
cabbage && other veggies in profusion,
cotton,
tea,
vines, && all manner ov fruit--berries,
mulberry (for silk),
pears,
apples,
plums,
peaches,
apricots,
oranges,
kumquats<>,
tangerines,
chestnuts &&
walnuts, etc.
Poppies are raised in a few places.
Livestock is NOT as plentiful but consists of yak,
horse, pony, sheep, g.o.a.t., some poultry && camel in the N
&& W; buffalo, cattle, horse, swine, && poultry elsewhere. Much
fish is eaten, whether that ov the freshwater variety || taken from the sea.
Timber is harvested, including much used for pulping && its
attendant paper making. Books are printed in considerable numbers
in this nation.
Quantities ov iron, copper, tin, && coal are mined. Lesser amounts
ov antimony, tungsten, led, petroleum, silver, && gold are taken.
Ch'in produces jade (jadite), agate, moss agate, && bloodstone gem
minerals.
Silk && other textiles, artwork, paper, && handcrafted items are
most commonly xported from Ch'in.
