DH: Yes, it's the greatest fantasy rpg ever made. murdock: SPI usually boasted some great artwork and well designed covers. This was not one of them. Oddly, the 3rd edition of DQ had the best cover of the bunch and better than most of the boring dreck TSR was shoveling on their AD&D stuff. 3rd ed is also easily the worst of the three editions. Go figure.

So what is the rundown with the history of this game, which editions are good, and so on.

SPI, the largest independent wargame company at the time, looked at D&D and said "what's wrong with this game and how can we make it better?" Thus was born DragonQuest. The second edition replaced the combat system with a new one. Three modules, a GM's screen and the first part of a setting, The Frontiers of Alusia, were published by SPI. Two modules and a "Rogues Gallery" type book were published by Judges Guild for the game.
Then SPI went out of business. Somebody fucked up and took a loan from those vipers at (guess who?) TSR and when the loan couldn't be repaid TSR seized all their assets and eventually ran what was left of the company into the dirt. In 1989, TSR published a 3rd edition of DQ with all the interesting parts cut out and a DQ/AD&D split module "The Shattered Statue." This done in order to maintain the copyright and they had no intention of supporting the game beyond that point.
That's the short and sweet version.

You can find pretty much everything for the game HERE. I personally recommend 2nd edition with the Arcane Wisdom supplement. That's about as complete as you can get as far as official material goes. If you have Chaosium's Thieve's World box set, you could make use of the DragonQuest chapter in that. It's not available on that site. There's also a site HERE that has other DQ material, but I haven't really checked it out. Worth a look, I reckon. Basically everything for the game is out there and pretty easy to find, since the was so little of it. Take the time to really dig into the magic system. For my money, it's still the best magic system ever made for an frpg.
