Last year, we had a game with a brownie familiar, and, I seem to remember that he saved the party's bacon, a few times. Generally, it is often posited that a familiar is a liability, but with regards to the special familiars, that is rather debatable, especially at low levels. For brownies, also note that they are presented as a class, in White Dwarf #29.
