*bells clanging*
Town Crier: "The King is dead!!! LONG LIVE THE KING!!!!" Town Drunk: *rolls about in his own filth* A Random Passerby (not named Göran): "Göran! Titta på rumpan!!!!" *points to a nice rear* A Random Passerby (named Göran): *looks at the rear*
*bells clanging*
From this scene, we cut to the court. Where nobles are in uproar, those that haven't been disemboweled yet, that is. The royal guard is routed and sent fleeing and various ruffians, mercenaries and vikings (even one werebear berzerker of Khorne) lounge about in the courtroom. A jester looking fella is trying to set the drapes on fire.
A man in wizardly robes shoots a tiny bolt of lightning at the jester, who bounces away to nurse his zapped behind. A man wearing a rather nice purple hooded cloak casually walks towards the throne and sits on it. He cracks open a beer and drinks half of it. The wizard takes his place beside the throne, smiling like only a man who will be the real power behind the throne smiles after a successful coup.
"Right. Kung Olav I and his court wizard Zlatan. That sounds just about correct?", says the purple cloaked fella as he dons the crown. "Years spent in exile in Finmark, and now we are back. And the realm of Svergie is ours."
The wizard Zlatan just nods.
"Our first commands. These ruffians need proper suits, and nice cloaks. Get a tailor. Also, send for more beer. And send a message via the International Guild of Drunkards to King Chris of Albion, that Svergie is under new management. And other places too, of course, we should not forget other places. And someone take the corpses away."

"How wouldst thou liketh the message to sent to King Chris of Albion?" inquires a courtier. "Land, sea, carrier pigeon, or by a sending?" "Also, Your Majesty: what ov the geriatocracy, led by Gustav Vasa? They are the real political power in Sverge, and, they rule from the Old Volk's Home." Another courtier clears his throat, in an "ahem", at this unintended slight towards the new king.

Gothenberg, c. 1017 (Aerth timeline: 17th c. technology is available, though the Norse deities are still venerated. Trollborn (1/2 trolls) and Runecasters still exist). Pop.: 25,000 (45,000 in Gary's canon: I am basically dividing population figures in half, to allow for more monsters & barbarism). Factions: * The Goths (known to dress in black clothing) * The Svergian East Hindoo company (a trading company, known to sail to the Hindoo lands) * The geriatocracy (led by Gustav Vasa, they rule from the Old Age Home)

Court Wizard Zlatan: "I WILL DEAL WITH GUSTAV VASA!" (Zlatan speaks quietly, but always in ALLCAPS) The courtier who brought it up exits stage left. Posthaste.

As per royal command, a message is sent to King Chris of Albion... ( chris107) The message can be sent via conventional means, or, feel free to make up magickal means of sending messages (I checked the sending spell, and, it requires familiarity with the recipient of the message). There's a great article about communication in fantasy worlds, not edition specific, in Dragon #116: "Hello, Your Majesty?". Note that Aerth canon mentions magick items of great power (artifacts/relics), prehaps, in the possession ov the royal house, for most realms. I've changed this so that these items are generally lost or hidden, so that adventurers have something to do. However, since this is now your realm, it's up to you as to whether any of the artifacts/relics are in the possession of the Royal House. I'll detail the Sovereign Horn, for you, in case you want this one. The Sovereign Horn * Blowing the Horn creates a border wall, once per month, along an entire national border * Side effect: -5 CHA to those who are not your followers * Side effect: You start turning orange * Powers of a horn of blasting, as well * Just having the horn in your possession makes you the target of 2d6 partisan terrorists, 1 in 6 chance per day of this happening
Different buttons on the horn activate different effects. In addition to the above listed powers, there are the following powers, as well.
* Minor benign power: Invisibility (improved) - 3 times/day * Major benign power: Dispel illusion upon command - 2 times/day * Minor malevolent power: User’s sex changes * Major malevolent power: Lose 1 point of DEX permanently * Prime power: User can cast 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells simultaneously, if a spellcaster * Side effect: Fumble reaction possible in any creature within 20' of the item whenever a major or primary power is used; all, including possessor, must save versus magic or fumble.

In the middle of one stormy night two weeks after the death of king Ivarr the third, in the stylishly furnished office of Gustav Vasa, a deal was struck between the Wizard Zlatan and the geriatrocracy... A deal even the new king was not told about. The mage revealed the secrets of becoming a lich to Vasa, and in return, he promised the vast political power of the geriatocracy to be at Zlatan's disposal.
Directly after the meeting, Zlatan polymorphed into a great albatross and took flight towards Albion, in order to seek out a champion to join him on a quest.

Blueprint for a Lich (from Dragon):
A. 2 pinches of pure arsenic B. 1 pinch of belladonna C. 1 measure of fresh phase spider venom (under 30 days old) D. 1 measure of fresh wyvern venom (under 60 days old) E. The blood of a dead humanoid infant killed by a phase spider F. The blood of a dead humanoid infant killed by a mixture of arsenic and belladonna G. The heart of a virgin humanoid killed by wyvern venom H. 1 quart of blood from a vampire or a person infected with vampirism I. The ground reproductive glands of 7 giant moths (dead for less than 60 days)
Note that this is not a sure thing (d100):
1-10 No effect whatsoever other than all body hair falling out — start over! 11-40 Coma for 2-7 days — the potion works! 41-70 Feebleminded until dispelled by Dispel Magic. Each attempt to remove the feeblemind has a 10% chance to kill him instead if it fails. The potion works! 71-90 Paralyzed for 4-14 days. 30% chance that permanent loss of 1-6 dexterity points will result. The potion works! 91-96 Permanently deaf, dumb or blind. Only a full wish can regain the sense. The potion works! 97-00 DEAD — start over . . . if you can be resurrected.
Of course, don't necessarily feel bound by the rules, but you can roll d100 if you want.
