These kinds of forums seem to be Dungeon Master "heavy", with discussion about things that are near & dear to DM hearts. They like talking about their campaign worlds, their house rules, their tricks & traps, etc.
Players don't have nearly as much to discuss. DMs have a lot of activity away from the table (preparation and so on), but for players most of the action is around the table.
Back when I was playing more frequently (and I'm using that in the sense of DMing AND playing here), players would look forward to these second edition "kits" and splatbooks. But to my mind, these can only go so far. If you have these continue to come out, you extend rules to a ridiculous extent.
So what *would* interest players in a discussion forum?

I dunno, Mr. Flowers. Most of the gamers I've encountered are a self-centered lot. Perhaps, min/max -ing?

Very good question RF.
The idea for a Player's (and DM's) Forum came from Morikhan over at DF, so I hadn't put much thought into it.
For players, perhaps:
* New races, classes (noting your observation about the 2E splatbooks, indeed) * Tips for successful adventuring * Discussion of play-styles * Pre-gens * An image gallery for PCs * Etc.
Some of the above might more properly go in the various edition forums, but that's what I've come up with so far.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I like the opportunity to mess with stuff and put my own foot print on the game. I don't want established routes to resolve an encounter or situation; I wan't to come up with my own.. something the DM didn't plan for.

Consistency - Knowing that the game will be here next week, month, year, decade. A chance to make a difference, large or small in a game that is above all - fun

As a player, what I want is an interesting and exciting game world to explore with a DM that is not going to crap all over things I want to do. No railroads, I want the freedom to explore and I expect the DM to improvise if I go off the edge of his map and prepared areas.
