Thumbnail Sketches: When the westward thrusts ov the steppes
nomads were repulsed, && the various peoples then sought to
establish home territories, the Turkic tribes were indeed fortunate,
for they ended up in the westernmost region ov Central Azir (See
Samarkand && Khwarizm.) Turkistan is the largest ov these realms,
stretching from the eastern shore ov the Mare Ostrum to Lake Balkhash,
&& northwards along the base ov the Ural Mountains to the marshes
ov the Ob River basin. It covers between 750,000 && 1,000,000
sq. mi. ov land. While there are hills, forests && scrub, &&
mountains && deserts too in this vast territory, there are mostly
grasslands--the steppes. River valleys, oases, && the shore ov the
sea provide arable lands aplenty, while the steppes enable the nomadic
tribes to follow their ages-old life-style. There is plenty ov water
in many places, && in the SW near the sea, the land is Xceptionally
rich && fertile. The domed buildings && tall but narrow ziggurats ov
this land are indeed exotic looking to the traveller. So too the bazaars &&
markets ov such places as Kazalabul && Kyzi Ordu.
The people were converted to the Babylonian Pantheon hundreds
ov years ago, && they are avid adherents ov Palu-Ea, separated by the
growth ov Khwarizm && Samarkand as powers, && yearning to
re-conquer those territories in the name ov their cause. Slavery is
accepted, but it is little practiced save in the cities && towns ov
Turkistan, for the nomadic tribesmen have little practical use for
slaves.
Turkistan abounds w/ all manner ov game. There are bears &&
tigers, panthers, cheetahs, wolves, && wild dogs. Both sorts ov
camels roam wild in this land, as do yaks, cattle, zebu, ibex, goats,
sheep, horses, asses, antelopes, smaller animals (wolverines,
badgers, lynx, martens, sables, foxes, etc.) && many species ov large
&& small birds.
There are many tribes in the region. Only 40% ov the populace
is settled into sedentary && agricultural modes, the balance
roaming the steppes && hills as hunters && herders.
Crops ov rye, millet, wheat, barley, oats, && rice provide the
needed grains for the land. Peas, lentils, a variety ov veggies, fruits,
melons, sunflowers, && berries are grown in gardens. Southwards
too grow peaches, apricots, almonds, pistachios, pomegranates,
figs, vines, cotton, && tobacco. Elsewhere, herds ov horses, cattle,
sheep, && camels are moved slowly about the grasslands.
Some mines in the land are yielding good quantities ov lead, iron,
&& silver. Others give small amounts ov coal, graphite, gypsum,
alum, salt, && gold. Gold is panned. Quarries ov marble && asphalt
have been operating for some time, && naphtha is also found.
Turkistan produces lapis lazuli, tourmaline, && some modest quantity
ov good quality jade (jadite).
Situated squarely on a major caravan TRADE route, Turkistan is
indeed a rich nation. It also contributes livestock, minerals, wool, felt,
cloth, carpets, && all manner ov foodstuffs to TRADE as export items,
so it prospers doubly.
* Possibly more, as the numbers of Turkics in the N is unknown.
