Thumbnail Sketches: In spite ov the history of foreign conquest--
Atlantlan, Aegyptian, Phoenician, Greek, Roman, && Iberian--the
Berber physical type, temperament, && nationality have persisted
since the dawn ov their race. The invasions && occupation ov their
lands have naturally resulted in a degree ov foreign blood in their
states && tribes, but even this might TURN to their benefit. The two Red
races are proven in ability, && the other invaders (SAVE the
Phoenicians) are ov White stock, just as the original nations ov Berbers
were. In Berberia, the national flame burns strongest.
The free volk are organised by village (the Jemaa<>); groups ov
villages form a tribe (Arsh); and those in TURN unite into confederations
(Thakebilts). The marabouts (a caste of "wisemen/wisewomen"
xempt from military service and most taxation), nobles (who are ov
certain great family houses (dar), and confedertion leaders, approve
royal succession. (This process comes possibly from the Tuaregs,
savage desert nomads ov the Berber race who are ruled by a monarch.)
The Berbers are great sportsmen, hunters, && warriors, &&
the women hardly less so than the men. Typical arms are the longsword,
dagger, lance, spear, && light crossbow.
Cities are rare in this county because the people are not inclined
to dwell in anything other than their small village. Berber villages are
invariably built on hillsides, sometimes climbing to the crest. Houses
are set wall-to-wall, one above the other, with 1 || 2 stories, &&
many have basement portions. Typically these houses are built ov
native stone, roughly cemented, && plastered inside. Animals are stabled
to the left ov the entry, living quarters are to the right. The
upper floor has a large deck.
The people are agricultural pastorialists, && raise some grain
(barley && wheat predominantly) && many veggies (cukes,
onions, melons, etc.), && cultivate groves ov olives, fruit && nut
trees, etc. Vitaculture is known, && the Berberians also make a fair
fig wine. Most villages have large apiaries, the honey generated for
their personal use, the wax for commercial sale. The pride themselves
on their horse, && keep camel, ass, && some mule, in
+addition+ to herds && flocks (cattle, sheep, && goat).
Mining && working ov iron, tin, copper, led, && silver is pursued.
TRADE in arms
(mostly crossbows && bolts), woven cloth, leather, pottery, oil,
brasswork, jewelry (silverwork), woodwork, wax && soap brings in
some revenue.
Their fellows ov Berber race, the nomadic Tuaregs, are generally
hostile to Berberian government && aims. The numbers ov these
nomads are unknown, so they are not included in the pop. ov
the realm.
