Hyperborea Finland, Russia and the Baltic countries (Hyperborea) was a land in "outermost north" according to Greek historian Herodotus. Howard's Hyperborea is described as the first Hyborian kingdom, "which had its beginning in a crude fortress of boulders heaped to repel tribal attack". - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyborian_Age#Etymology

The Baltic Sea was home of the Victual Brothers, a seaborn mercenary group that later turned to piracy. Their most notorious captains were Klaus Störtebeker, Gödeke Michels, Hennig Wichmann and Magister Wigbold.

Somewhere in the Baltic Sea, there is an island called Gets It Island, where high level characters retire, at least the ones that don't want to open bars in scuzzy cities. It is sometimes just called "Getland", not to be confused with "Gotland". Get it? (Thanks: subaltari)

Although native to Faerie, aquatic elves are found in the Baltic Sea, and, they sometimes trade with humans. However, they tend to more reclusive than the high elves, and it is a rare sight to see one of them near the surface.

You find plenty of amber washed ashore on the Baltic Sea's coasts. Most likely, those are plunder that was lost during the Sahuagin / Sea Elf struggles.

It's quite possible that the amber is of Livestonian origin, as it is one of the major producers of Amber on Aerth.
Thanks for the idea of a sahuagin empire: I'll see if I can fit that in, somehow. I'd imagine the sahuagin as being native to Earth, unlike the sea elves, who are native to Phaeree. Of course, at some point in history or prehistory, the sea elves arrived via gate (how would underwater gates work? anyone here an expert on fluid dynamics?), and, probably established colonies within the Baltic Sea. Note that elves are strongly associated with the Norse (Skandian/Teutonic) myths, and that was the basis for my decision to place them within the Baltic Sea. For more information about the Aquatic Elves, including 1/2 surface 1/2 aquatic elves, and 1/2 aquatic elves, see Dragon #116. With regards to monster placement, I've just arrived at the letter "F", so it will be another month or so before I get to the letter "S" and make the entry/post for the sahuagin.
