Coinage: Ch'in Standard.
Important Persons: Princes ov Jilin && Liaoling, Duke ov Liaodong,
generals <Jung Choi, Son ov The General>, clerics, officials, nobs, etc.
Alliances: Ch'in.
Hostilities: Liang, Manchuria, Nippon.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: Sea skirmishes with Nipponese, on
land against the Liangese.
Intrigues: Treating w/ Manchuria to form alliance which will
strengthen the realm against the Nipponense-Liangese--&& at the
same time allow opportunity to become master ov Manchuria. There
are many palace plots && other intrigues, too, ov course.
Magickal Devices: This realm has managed to retain independence
through its possession ov the Seven Precious Branch, the Celestialal
Carp, && the Sunsource Scroll ov Sinanju. There are also some
number ov intermediate && minor items held by Po-Hai.
Alignment: Neutral <paramanders>
Thumbnail Sketches: Peninsular (Hahn) Po-hai covers some 70,000
sq. mi., w/ mainland territory adding another 100,000 to the
whole. Despite its Xtensive size, however, the kingdom is NOT particularly
wealthy, save in its gold, nor powerful, save in its willingness
to take the field against all comers. The Chinese support it because it
is an Xcellent buffer between them && their northern && eastern
(Nipponese) foes.
Po-hai is mostly a mountainous land, w/ only some 15%
plains. Much ov those (in Liaoning) Xperiments w/
saline-consuming ground vegetation are being undertaken to try to
make such land productive. The 60% ov the realm which is
wilderness is mostly covered w/ forests && scrub in which huge
&& ferocious tigers prowl, along with leopards, bears, boars, many
sorts ov deer && antelopes, && other small game. Numerous large
&& small birds are likewise found there along the coasts ov the
realm. The Hahn Peninsula's southern && western coast is sprinkled
w/ 200 or more islands && islets. Despite all, it is NOT a particularly
lovely land, && its northern portions are quite inhospitable in the
cold months && are sparsely populated accordingly. The architecture
ov Po-hai is heavily influenced by Ch'in, but it is more solid &&
less beautiful in the most part. Its cities too are very much like those
ov the empire to the west. Kaisong, for instance, is both a typical Por-
haian city && a 1st-rate Xample ov a walled town.
The people ov Po-hai have melded into a homogeneous sort,
distinct from Chinese && Nipponese, && somewhat resembling
the ancient Korean, w/ a hint ov their Ch'in && Mongol admixture, but
NOT being as large as the Chinese ov the far western portion
ov that realm. Peasants are mostly small landowners && make up 80%
ov the pop. They serve as stolid but brave infantry in
the army when called forth to make war. The middle class ov Po-hai is
comprised ov traders && proprietors, merchants, the large landowners,
etc. Its aristocractic class is similar to the Ch'in mandarin one, w/
nobility included. The people are very fond ov their own variety ov
Chinsungese chess, various other board games (dignitaries, etc.),
&& kite flying. They drink more alcohol than their neighbors in Ch'in
but gamble less.
Crops ov rice, wheat, millet, barley, maize, oats, rye, sweet potatoes,
beans, potatoes, peas, tobacco, cotton, mulberry (for silk),
hemp, && indigo are grown. Gardening produces many kinds ov
veggies && root crops. Orchards yield persimmons, walnuts,
chestnuts, pears, peaches, && plums ov fair sort. Livestock is mostly
confined to swine, fowl, oxen (ov a lovely red sort), && sturdy working
ponies. Some few sheep && goats are now being raised as well.
Mines are very productive, && quantities ov gold, iron, copper, coal, rock
crystal, silver, && talc are used internally && sold for Xport to help
support the cost ov maintaining the realm's military. Sea salt is also
produced in some quantity for consumption && trade.
Xports incl. gold, ginseng (in quantities), crystal, oiled paper, bamboo,
&& woven matting.
