Nifflen
Gummint: Republican
Mythos: Norse (S)
ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘT: Inar Greataxe, Speaker
CAPITAL: Reykjavik (Pop.: 20k)
Other Cities (and pop.):
None.
Loc.: Aeropa (Island)
Language: Skandian
Pop.: 100k
Flag/Emblem:
Flag: Black sea serpent
coiled to encircle a red
crown on a white field.
Coinage: None.
Companions: Nobs, clerics, chiefs, etc.
Friends: TRADE w/ Norge.
Foes: None.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: With several Grossnifflen ships which
might lead to hostilities between the two islands.
Intrigues: Send colonists to Jarlesheim && begin a TRADE route from
there to the Skandian peninsula. Other more devious && dark
intrigues possible.
Artifacts/Relics: The only devices known to be in possession
ov Nifflen are, fortunately for the volk ov this island, the dragonship
Ellide && Brakki's Elemental Athenor.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral <lyans>
Thumbnail Sketches: The island of Nifflen is volcanic, && much of
it resembles Norge, in that it has glacier-like snow fields && fjords. A
little more than 1/3 of the land is habitable, the rest being lakes or
unfertile scrub forest (15%) && ice && lava barrens (50%).
About 8% of the land is arable, && the rest is suited
only for hay meadows or pastures. There are numbers of geysers &&
hot springs on Nifflen. The long shoreline of the island is frequented
by walruses && seals, && an occasional polar bear brought S by
ice floe. Reindeer were brought to the island centuries ago, and a
small wild herd now inhabits Nifflen. There are also wild dogs here,
foxes, some few species of small animals, and birds, including
several sorts of water fowl of migratory nature. Reykjavik is the only
town, a trading port stop-over on the voyage between the N of
Aeropa && Vargaard, && its traffic is increasing gradually. Elsewhere
in Nifflen there are a few scattered villages and isolated farmsteads.
The warm gulfstream current and the now (semi-controlled) volcanoes
give the place a climate similar to that of southern Norge.
Volcanoes of 3 different sorts exist on the island, && their
eruptions both enlarge the land and promote disasters unless kept in
check. In the past, ash has ruined pastures && made summers cold,
so that livestock was virtually wiped out. Magickal control of the
element of fire has been most helpful to the islanders in recent times.
Many eruptions && outflows have been directed undersea or in the
northern barrens, && the livable portion of Nifflen is gradually
increasing (0.1% per annum).
Vikings found Nifflen uninhabited around <200, && gradually a
port was built up over the next century. Shortly thereafter, the land
declared itself a free && independent republic. The original inhabitants
were approximately 50% Norgeans, 30% Danes,
&& 20% Svergians. A few additional colonists have been
added, most from Norge, so today the country is absolutely of Skand
race, with Norge stock predominating. All people are free, && there
is scant delineation between peasant && aristocracy.
Barley plus buckwheat && rye are grown in increasing quantity, so
cereals no longer need to be imported to feed the population. Root
vegetables (potatoes, turnips, etc.), some few sorts of others, rhubarb,
&& berries are cultivated for internal consumption. Sheep &&
cattle are kept, && some few poultry as well. Fishing is very crucial to
the existence of Nifflen. About 20% of the population is
engaged in some aspect of its fisheries, && catches include whales,
walruses, && seals.
A few mahydrols<> of considerable size have been found in Nifflen.
Fair quantities of common opal are mined in Nifflen.
Fish, woolen goods && wool, && some small number of handicraft
items are the only exports from Nifflen, and it needs much in the
way of imports, but trading traffic enables this.
