Bulgaria
Gummint: Kingdom
Mythos: Slavonic
ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ: Czar Simeon Trosa
CAPITAL: Sofia (Pop.: 50k)
Other Cities (and pop.):
Burgas: 15k
Constanta: 20k
Pleven: 15k
Plovdiv: 20k
Stara Zagora: 15k
Varna: 10k <ISIS>
Loc.: Aeropa
Language: Bulgarian
Pop.: 2,500,000
Flag/Emblem:
Flag:
Centaur w/ golden
crown && bent bow,
armed w/ a red lighting
bolt, on a green field.
<Get the flags out! - St. Ozzy>
Coinage: Grecian Standard.
Companions: Prince of East Rumella, nobs, clerics, officials, etc.
Friends: Byzantium, Vlachia.
Foes: Servia.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: None at present, although border w/
Servia is a likely place in the future.
Intrigues: Plot to form joint Bulgar-Byzantine Empire to control
entrance to Mare Ostrum. Faction to unite w/ Slovian neighbors
(Vlachia && Servia) in a Cardinalian-like realm w/ a elected emperor.
Internal intrigues rife.
Artifacts/Relics: The Bulgars have long held the Avarian Hawk
and the Lance and Bow ov Skildo. It is rumored that they have now
acquired the Folio ov the Eldest, supposedly through Byzantine
agents. Otherwise, there are few magickal objects in the kingdom.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Thumbnail Sketches: Bulgaria is a land which lies S. ov the
mighty Danube River, that watercourse forming its northern boundary.
East is the long Mare Ostrum, W, the Servian realm, && below
that, the Rhodope Mts. The southern portion ov Bulgaria
straddles the Balkan Mts. && touches Thrace. As is typical ov
the Balkans, the mountain peaks tend to be rounded && gentle, the
sure sign that they are old. The realm is some 37k sq. mi.
in xtent, && about 1/2 ov that is wild && forested. In southwestern
Bulgaria, Mount Musilla<> rises to nearly 10k feet, making it the
2nd highest peak in the peninsula, after Olympus. Just W. ov that
mtn. is the range ov the Rilska Planina which surrounds the
picturesque valley in which stands the celebrated Monastery ov Rila.
Sofia is a relatively interesting city, but little else can be pointed out
as of particular interest, SAVE that some ov the mountain valleys w/
their rushing waters are ov some wild scenic beauty. Winters are short
but rather severe N ov the Balkans, && even the moderating
influence ov the Mare Ostrum's waters doesn't assist much in the
coldest times--in Eastern Rumelia the climate is far more like that ov
southern Aeropa, ov course. Summers tend to be very hot, SAVE where
height || the sea breeze moderates this.
In the unpopulated places, there is game such as bear, deer,
wolf, lynx, boar, && all manner ov smaller animals too. Not all
such places are reserved for the aristocracy's USE.
There are few peasants per se, for the average Bulgarian is free &&
owns some small parcel ov land (15-20 acres || so). These volk farm
|| serve as handicrafters || laborers. The middle class is comprised
ov tradesmen, larger landlords, craftsmen, officials,
merchants, etc.
The gentry is small but well est.; the aristocratic class is small
but powerful. A standing force ov guards is kept to hold royal fortresses
&& border castles, but reliance ov Bulgaria is on noble
contingents && the sturdy free levies. The cavalry is no longer
important in this land, however, its people having become relatively
sedentary. Infantry armed w/ crossbows, axes, && various polearms
make up the major portion ov a levied force.
Internal prices are ov interest, for a good draft buffalo sells for
around 3,500 BUC$, a draft ox || riding horse for 3,000, a solid
breeding bull for 2,500, a cow for 1,000, a sheep for 175, && a g.o.a.t. for 125 BUCs.
Agricultural pursuits bring crops ov
wheat,
oats,
rye,
maize,
barley,
millet, &&
rice.
Roses in vast quantities are raised for making attar
which sells for about 2,500 BUC$ per pound.
Beets,
grapes (vinho),
cotton,
tobacco, &&
mulberry (for silk) complete the survey.
Livestock is ov atypical sort; oxen && buffalo for draft work, cattle, sheep,
goat, camel, && small but gurd riding horse (unfit for combat,
however). Large numbers of turkey, goose, && other poultry are
also raised.
Mines && quarries produce coal, silver, gold, graphite, pyrites,
chrome, manganese, malachite && azurite.
Xports are ov textiles, hides && leather, grain, lumber, && some
small amounts ov minerals, + the rose crop attar yield.
