From: Epic of Aerth Addenda, by Gregg Timm. Muya (pg. 136) The Muyans have a highly sophisticated culture due to their contact with both Olmec-derived peoples and the Lemurians. Their language is a hybridization of their native tongue mixed with a Lemurian vocabulary. The Muyans are distinct in appearance, with their pronounced nose, slanting forehead, black hair, and full lips. They have a very accurate calendar system and a system of writing that involves pictograms, which also have phonetic values. They build impressive stone step-pyramids with bases 200 feet on a side and rising steeply to nearly 100 feet in height. Broad staircases on all four sides climb the sides to wood and stone temples at the pinnacle. They also build “I”-shaped courts around 250 feet in length wherein they play an interesting sport involving propelling a hard, rubber ball through small stone hoops on either side of the court using flat, stone scoops. This is known as pok-ta-pok, and the leader of the losing team is often executed! The deities of the Muyans are, in fact, the Lemurian gods that were imposed upon them by their former masters. They include: Hunab Ku (supreme creator god), Itzamna (sky & moon god), Ixchel (goddess of fecundity), Hurakan (storm and wind deity), Kukulcan (serpent deity of culture & resurrection), Chaac (rain deity), Hunhau (death god), and Nacon (war deity, for whom the holkam-okat-“dance of warriors”-is performed). Sacrificial victims are usually disjointed, lacerated with obsidian or flint knives, and then decapitated, or have their hearts cut out. The high priest is called Ac-ay. The land of their territory is mostly rain forest, with ceiba, mahogany, rosewood, logwood tree, sapodilla, cacao, lianas, ferns, and mosses growing about. Jaguars, deer, monkeys, tapirs, coati, toucans, macaws, quetzal birds, and snakes are common. The soil is thin over the limestone bedrock, but through careful cultivation and fallow techniques, the Muyans are able to raise decent crops of maize and beans. An item of moderate power held by the Muya is the Obsidian Scrystone (Chay aba).

ACTUN TUNICHIL MUKNAL CAVE, BELIZEThe Mayans believed that a network of caves in modern-day Belize led to their underworld, Xibalba. The cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal, which was rediscovered in 1989, was once believed to be a place filled with blood and scorpions. The present scenario is no less frightening with skeletons of humans, believed to have been ritualistically murdered as a sacrifice to the Death Gods, scattered across the network of caves. Giant ants are found in Muya, and, they have been known to make war against human societies. It is to be noted that that Muyans have more war-gods than any other culture on Aerth. Muyan city-states, within the context of their theocratic confederacy, fortify their cities both above and below ground. This is necessary, to defend against giant ants, which can (and have) decimated Muyan cities, in the past. Note that this is a divergence from AD&D canon, based on FMA2 Endless Armies. To note: FREQUENCY: Rare ([Temperate Wilderness Hills], [Temperate Wilderness Plains]) FREQUENCY: Rare ([Tropical Wilderness Hills], [Tropical Wilderness Plains]) Note that giant ants do not exist in rainforests, according to AD&D canon. I've decided to disregard this, as it was perhaps an omission by Gary Gygax / Frank Mentzer, from the MONSTER MANUAL II. I'm hesitant to diverge the from the Official 1st. Ed. AD&D rules, but, in this case, I think that I am justified, being inspired by FMA2. Antapoclypse Now, San Prespos

Deities and Demigods, p.32 claims that the ruling god Quetzalcoatl also goes by the Mayan name Kulkulcan. In reality, Kulkulcan is a distinct creature whose "plumed serpent" shape is one the Aztec god often likes to take. This form is similar in appearance to a couatl, but about half again as large (Monster Manual, p.15). It is regarded as a unique and divinely powerful being whose home is the alternate material plane of the Mayan gods, but which often roams the ethereal plane. It can also animate any of its serpentine statues, found and revered throughout Mesoamerican religious sites. In particular, the largest step pyramid in any major center of Mayan worship (such as Chichen Itza) usually has Kulkulcan statuary on its north face, with the serpent's head resting at the base of the stairs or pyramid edge. The real Kulkulcan is compelled to animate this statue, crawling its way down the steps, on the morning of every equinox. If Kulkulcan is killed on the prime material plane, its body turns to stone and the being reforms on its home plane. It may then return to the prime material plane after 7 days.
Kulkulcan is treated as a dragon in all relevant ways, including spells and items which affect dragonkind. It radiates the same fear aura as an ancient dragon (worshipers of Central American deities get +4 to their saving throws). It can fly at up to 18" with maneuver class B, while also carrying up to 9000gp weight. Its choice of breath weapons either causes sonic vibration damage (77 h.p.) or turns its victims to stone (unless they save vs. dragon breath); in either case the area of effect is identical to a gorgon's breath, a cone 6" long and 2" diameter at the end. Its other attacks are similar to a couatl's, except its bite is not venomous. Kulkulcan can use cleric and druid spells as a caster of 9th level in both classes. In addition, it has the following special abilities, any one of which may be used each round unless otherwise noted.
Earthquake: From dawn on the summer solstice and for the next 30 days, Kulkulcan can cause earthquakes at will. At other times of the year, it can use this ability only once per week. The effect is that of the seventh level cleric spell, but affecting an area only 6" in diameter. Ethereal form Flesh to stone (self) / stone to flesh (self or others) Polymorph self Summon hero (see below) Telekinesis: 3000gp weight Teleport without error Weather summoning
Devouring heroes: If Kulkulcan defeats a combatant it considers to be brave and noble, it may swallow the corpse whole. It cannot do this to a living creature. The bodies and souls of devoured heroes go to reside on Kulkulcan's plane instead of Xibalba (the Mayan realm of the dead). When hard pressed in battle, the serpent is able to call forth these warriors to fight for it. Kulkulcan is unable to use its breath weapons or spells in the round it does so, for the summoned warrior emerges out of its mouth before leaping into the fray. A summoned hero may have predetermined stats, or else be a generic, Mayan male human fighter between 2nd and 7th level (d6+1). The latter will be fanatically loyal to Kulkulcan and he will come armed with an atlatl and 3 missiles, a wood-obsidian macahuitl (treat as +1 broadsword), a wooden club, stiffened cloth armor and a shield (AC 7, move 9"). Kulkulcan can summon one of these warriors per round almost indefinitely, as it has probably hundreds at its disposal.
