Hibernia
Gummint: Kingdom
Pantheon: Celtic <Irish> <17th c.>
Ruler: Finn VII <Finn mac Cool>
CAPITAL: Dublin (Pop.: 50k)
Other Cities (and pop.):
Belfast: 20k
Cork: 45k
Galway: 25k
Limerick: 30k
Shannon: 80k
Wexford: 20k
Loc.: Aeropa (Avillonia)
Language: Kelltic
Pop.: 3,500,000
Flag/Emblem:
Flag: Quartered blue and
green, a golden harp
charged in center, and
the quarters bearing a
boar, a star, a trigram,
and a hound.
Emblem: Ash tree.
Coinage: G: harp; S: crown; C: fin; B: common.
Companions: Aethels ov the four principalities, the Archdruid
ov Hibernia, Thegn Niall the Steward, nobs, clerics, officials,
<The Grand Poobah ov Connaught (Anti-Steve)>, <Lily Munster>, <Lord Dunsany> etc.
Alliances: Five Crowns.
Hostilities: None at present.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: Internal strife.
Intrigues: Dispute between Munster && Connaught. Plot to enthrone
new king <The Grand Poobah?>. Plan to send colonists to settle in Nova Scotia (and get rid ov many trouble-makers thus).
Magickal Devices: The sword Caladbolg, the spear Gas Bulg, the
Spears && Shields ov Conchobar, the Sword ov Cuchulainn, the
Shadowsteed, the Wheel ov the Tuatha De<'> Danann, && the Bottomless
Kettle ov Courage are the most puissant items in possession ov
the Hibernians. Large numbers ov spears, swords, && shields ov
intermediate quality are held in the king's && nobles' arsenals.
Alignment: Neutral
Thumbnail Sketches: The island ov Hibernia might be likened to a
basin, for its coastline rises after a few miles ov shore to a ring of old
mountains (rounded, peaked, && even plateaued) which very nearly
surrounds the whole isle. However, they by no means preclude
access to the interior, for the river valleys && other passes allow easy
access. The ovoid interior is a vast plain which tends from about 400-
500' above sea level to a central portion ov from 250-200'
elevation, the boglands. Hibernia incl. the main island && 14
small isles off the western coast && is over 36k sq. mi. in
xtent. Forests (oak, elm, ash, etc.) cover 20% ov the land;
scrub, waste, lakes, rivers, && bog account for almost 30% ov
the surface. The remainder is in fields, meadows, && other productive
use. Clear && black-hued rivers && lakes are a distinctive mark
ov Hibernia. Some believe that the peat bogs darken waters, others
claim another cause. Canals for transport && drainage have made
some ov the bogland usable, && more is xpected to be so dried
through ditching && planting ov such vegetation such as willows.
There is considerable game found on the island. Bear, panther,
&& wolf are its large predators. There are stag, boar, auroch,
deer, && various smaller animals && birds too.
Although Dublin (originally founded by Norgean && Danish invaders)
is the official CAPITAL ov the kingdom because ov its port's proximity
to Albion, Cymru, && even Caledonia && Lyonesse, the true
seat ov most royal activity, && the place where the most time is spent,
is Shannon. Built on the east shore ov Lough (pronounced "loch") Ree,
this is the westernmost portion ov Meath && the only large community
ov the interior. It is a strongly fortified && well-planned metropolis
which takes advantage ov the new canals which have done so much
to improve the land.
The original inhabitants ov the land are thought to have been some
primitive tribes allied to those of Gaul. <cf. The Book of Invasions>
Kelltic immigration began in
the ancient period, followed by various incursions ov Picts (from
Caledonia) && Brythokells. A bit later, colonies ov Atlantlans,
Phoenecians && Grecian-type "Sea Peoples" settled into the island
over several centuries ov time. All were generally absorbed, the Kelltic
culture predominating. Just before the Fall, continual invasions &&
colonies ov Skands plagued the island, but these too were eventually
absorbed || xpelled by the Hibernians. However, it has given them
a distinctive appearance as opposed to the Cymruans && Lyonnese,
for instance. For a time they were as rapacious && piratical as any ov
the Vikings who harried their coasts && ravaged the interior.
The social structure ov the state is typical ov a semi-feudal one. Although
the peasant class is mostly free, it is ov a size && economic condition like
most in Western Aeropa. Most are farmers, fishers, || laborers. There are
still some bandits && freebooters to be found in Hibernia. The middle &&
upper classes are likewise quite typical. The land is divided into 4 great
principalities--Connaught <Connacht>, Leinster <Laighin>, Munster, && Ulster--
these, in turn,
having five thegnships (counties) incl. within them. The crown lands
are known as Meath, && also have 5 counties within their bounds.
Because ov the steady rainfall, it is difficult to get grains to ripen
even though the mean temperature ov Hibernia is slightly above that
ov southern Albion. However, some oats, barley, wheat, rye, &&
maize is grown. Veggie crops are very important, potatoes being
primary, followed by turnips (&& their kin), cabbage, beets, sugar
beets, etc. Many other sorts are grown, ov course, as are berries &&
fruit trees ov typical sort (cherry, plum, pear, && so on). Cranberries
are being raised in the boglands w/ some considerable succeess.
Flax is the major ca$h crop.
Hay is everywhere for livestock,
&& cattle is the principal animal kept, followed by sheep, poultry,
pork, fowl, && horse.
Fishing is a major activity for Hibernia. Some
little timber is now being harvested as replanting && management ov
woodlands allows.
The mineral wealth ov the state is quite high. Platinum && gold are
only taken in small quantity, but silver is found in considerable
amounts. A poor coal, peat, iron, bauxite, alum, led, zinc, && clay
(fire && brick) are mined. Quarries produce marble, slate, granite,
&& sandstone. Hibernia produces fine rock crystal bearing
Hekalite traces, topaz, && common opal.
Principal exports are livestock, cheese, beer, whiskey, && linen.
