Last Tuesday I started playing a DS game with a group of youths (ranging, i think, from 17-28,) some noobs, some experienced. I'm not entirely sure which is which yet. We all started at 3rd level, as you do in Dark Sun. I had rolled up a beastly halfling rogue- I don't remember the exact rolls, but it was something like 17/17/16/14/11/8. Needless to say I was pretty satisfied with what I had. However, one of the girls playing wanted a Ranger and rolled pretty poorly.
As she was new to the game and the party needed a Ranger (considering the nature of Dark Sun) and I wasn't sure I was gonna make every game, I asked if we could switch rolls, which the DM agreed to. Huzzah! She got her Ranger (to everyone's benefit,) I still had my little fella. Everybody happy.
The party consisted of:
Human (or Elf) Bard
Dwarf Fighter
Human Fighter
Halfling Rogue (me)
Elf Rogue
Thri-Kreen Water Cleric
Human Ranger
A pretty good group, I'd say.
Cut to about two hours later, real time, and four of us are dead, slain by a fucking vampiric thorn bush of all things. Fell for the ol' "venus flytrap" gag and paid the price. First guy down fell for it. Second guy down died trying to help the first. Third guy down thought he was safe entering an opening in the bush (which formed a big ring with "water" in the middle) and got X's over his eyes. The fourth was the Rangerette who, I think, was making some sort of protest against the DM and sort of committed suicide by entering the fray. A little annoyed at that, but whateva.
The third guy was me, making a rookie mistake by letting my old school guard down. Feh! Still, well all had a really good time (I know I did, anyway.) It was my first face-to-face game in about ten years and kinda feel like I lucked out stumbling into a group of non-tards playing an old school-style AD&D game. Next time, four new characters!
PS- not having a weapon and being that I was a puny thief, I resorted to using a handful of sand and my teeth two defeat two opponents, respectively.
