I make no secret nor apology over my great affection for Runequest. For me Runequest is synonymous with the world of Glorantha and the two books that make this world come alive for me are Cults of Prax and Cults of Terror. They follow a common format in that the various religions (cults) are explained beautifully in short essays told through the eyes of a local narrator; Viturian in Prax and the Lunar initiate of Irripi Ontor Paulis Longvale in Terror.

The first two dozen pages of the book also give further insight into the Pre-History of Glorantha and expand on the known tales of the Gods War and the incursion of the Devil/Wakbath all essential back ground reading if you want to get deep into the bones of this rich and vibrant fantasy setting. The majority of the rest deal with the individual cults and then an appendices of new spells, cult relations and other miscellany.

The adventures that Paulis lives through are told cult by cult and tell of his time with his uncle Hahlgrim, a Wind Lord of Orlanth and Prince of the Bilini Tribe and the war brought out of Dorastor by Ralzakark, King of the Broo upon King Bolthor Hairy Breeks. There are several great twists and turns and some really interesting characters both good and wicked along the way.

King Balthor is in big trouble. He has horrid Chaos pressing in on his realm from all sides and within. Reluctantly he invites the out of favour Runelord Hahlgrim to fight his enemies. He offers the magical sword Ironbreaker to make good the pact, a mighty gift indeed. The Windlord and his warband including his Rune Priest Kettil Ericsbane, his cousin Oddi Priest of the Stormbull and young Paulis set off to do war upon the forces of Ralzakark.

Each Cult has a full description with Paulis & Co.'s adventures detailed and used to give more information and background. The same easy to follow format as is used in Prax makes it easy to create cult members from the lowest right through to members at Rune level. Although this book was meant to create formidable enemies to the good guys it would be simple enough to use it for creating unusual PC's. Try running a Scorpian Man, Broo or Thanatari Head Hunter. Expand the Lunar Cult detailed in CoP with the fearsome Crimson Bat or become illuminated and see the subtleties of Gbaji the Deciever.

The Cults detailed are.
Primal Chaos - The Chaos Ooze. All chaos cults are based upon this cult and have it as an associate cult. It is the source and mother of all later chaos things and seeped into the world through the cracks in reality caused by the God's War.

Mallia, Mistress of Disease. A goddess of Death and Darkness. Much associated with the Broo where she also takes on the Chaos Rune. Her followers take great delight in the suffering of others and the spreading of foul disease.

Bagog the Scorpion Queen. When the Devil led his forces into the surface world many other creatures also escaped there. Creatures like the Scorpion Folk and their Queen Bagog. These dreadful canabilistic monsters still plague the world.

Thed, Mother of the Broo. Thed was the wife of Ragnaglar the Mad God and the Broo were their children. Together with Malia she and her husband schemed to introduce chaos into the world in the form of the Devil. During the God's War, Ragnaglar was slain by the Storm Bull, Mallia left the conspiracy and Kyger Litor the Troll God defeated and skinned Thed. The Devil was finally defeated by Storm Bull and cast into Hell. Thed dispersed to all the dark corners of the universe including Prax. She is still honoured by the Broo.

Vivamort, Lord of the Undead. Vivamort was a Darkness spirit in Hell. Placed there to stand guard over the Terrible Secret (Death). He betrayed this trust and when Humakt and Eurmal stole The Secret he aided them thus releasing Death into the world. He was cursed and cut off from the universe (the Power statistic) and so had to rip power from others to survive. This cast him aside from both life and death and so he took up the cause of chaos and created many more like unto himself. The Undead.
