For me, I mostly delight in the clash of personalities.
I don't play much, rather I DM, but when I do play, it's also engaging to win at all costs... I'm there to sift through ruins with vigilance! I don't much care what stats my character has...it can be fun to run a character concept, but I'm unattached to the whole theatrical process.

Spending time with mates and alcohol. Adventure. One-liners. Ponchos and cloaks.

I just like creating stuff. Characters, dungeons, whole realms and planes, whatever.
The game itself (the playing of it) is just a secondary thing really these days. Time for it is in short enough supply that actually running something doesn't happen anywhere near as much as it used to - and I have to admit, that doesn't really bother me too much.
I think a large part of it is from being forced to DM/GM/(insert relevant M here) through most my time of playing RPG's.
Makes you appreciate the creative part of it, and you get distanced from the actual playing part.
Kind of like Warhammer/40K/BFG, etc. I can sit there and paint miniatures for years on end without caring too much if I actually ever set them on a table for an actual game.

Mainly, just spending fun times with friends. I fear that my only regret in life is that I have not played enough (A)D&D... Pres

Nothing anymore. Roleplaying through D&D is antiquated and systems like WoD, Fate, and GURPS give you a far greater sense of being part of the world and being in it where AD&D is a worse version of the plot railroad in any modern videogame.

That's sad I'm playing in the same campaign with (mostly) the same guys since 1976. Still drinking beer and munching pizza together. Don't know may video games that manage that. Best Chris

Again, the best part of playing (A)D&D is that, over the years, you're going to make some friends. Prespos

AD&D used to be the best example of mechanics as a narrative, but DMs somehow gotten worse at role playing, not any better.

being with friends, things that work, things that fail. Having that inside joke with friends...

I do love those inside jokes and stories... I bought a pair of "Fuzzy Pink Handcuffs" from Spencers just to bring back the joke we had from d20 a few years ago. Good times.

Well, friends. Pres PS. I think that repeating oneself is a sign of getting old.
