Session #2: Update, Session #2: The heroes delved below the Moathouse, and, found great danger there, and, a little treasure for their trouble. Wisely, they retreated back to Hommlet to heal. The session ended with a force of 40 men-at-arms riding into Hommlet, accompanied by 2 Justiciars. The 7 brigands(?) (captured in session #1) are being taken to Verbobonc, to face justice. The plot thickens. What seems simple may not be simple. Small actions may have big consequences. Disappearing caravans, 7 brigands(?), 42 riders from Verbobonc. What is going on? Has pernicious evil returned to the area? Was the victory against the forces of the Temple, 10 years ago, complete? These, and many other questions, yet remain to be answered. There is hope in perspicaciousness and prudence. Yet, imprudence and complacency may well yet spell the doom of the unwary. DM Prespos Ps. Thank you to everyone who showed up. Inspired by a house rule of Frank Mentzer, everyone who attended session #2 will receive a bonus award of 180 XP, as an attendance bonus. Ps2. Session #3: The burning of the gnolls Our brave heroes spent time at the Inn of the Welcome Wench, then explored the lower level of the Moathouse, freeing 3 prisoners, including a gnome by the gname of Krendalabingus Foringus Noringus (Kren). They later became almost trapped in the lower level, but were able to bend the bars of the portcullis trap that was intended to keep them in. Finally, they defeated a group of gnolls, doing so by surprise and the use of many flasks of oil. Wonderful! Can you also add the map of the area we have discovered so far? I think because we are doing this via skype it will really help out to visualize where we are, and what we've seen so far.
Cheers, Erik

Thank you for that link!Morning Star, Prespos Great mini, BTW, yours? I dont have the map, I meant could you take the maps that you gave us in game and post them up in some contiguous manner so we can see the whole picture. I think that would be a huge help to all of us. Does that make sense? I'm the oil idea guy! And with great pleasure to share stuff. So much of the old AD&D stuff is really not covered under any copyright protections anymore as far as sharing, which is why it's all openly up on the internet. I suspect that's part of the reason 'premium' editions were published to 'add value' to existing materials. The Permanent Character Record is a great resource.

With regards to the monsters in session #4, there were only a few guards, and it's easier to bundle the XP for those with their fellow guards that were defeated in session #5.
I'll try to post full data for session #5 in the next 48 hours.

Sounds great! What a freakin awesome session! Cant wait to get dug into Nulb and this Temple of Elemental Evil they spoke of!
Will you let us know next session if we have any encounters on the road between Hommlet and Celene? Wilderness encounters are a great way to pump up those xps and gosh knows I need as many as I can get!!!

Yes, I will pre-generate wilderness encounters (as per the official World of Greyhawk tables)) and weather in advance, for 3-4 days of travel. I'm assuming that there is a road that leads south to Enstad (the capital of Celene), and that the party will be following this road.

6737 for clerics & MUs 7496 for warriors 11,200 for the thief
Sorry, I should have made that more clear: the numbers in bold are your total xp, including your 10% bonus, which I assume you have.
Pres
PS. If you have the 2e DMG, you can take a look at page 48, which lists the individual XP awards. I've modified Table 34, along these lines:
WARRIORS: 10 xp per HD of creature defeated. This award is given to all warriors who participated in a combat.*
PRIESTS: 100 xp per level of spell cast 100 xp for turning undead
WIZARDS: 100 xp per level of spell cast
ROGUES: 100 xp per use of a class ability 1 xp per gold piece of treasure*
* Awarded out of game.
These changes were made for the sake of balance and simplicity. If you have any further questions, please let me know.
PS2. Using an example for the fighters in the party (Gunth, Throdrun, and Dick), you guys received 7496 xp.
This is from: * treasure (most XP was from treasure) * monsters * attendance: 240 XP * 10% ability bonus * class award: 690 XP for defeating 69 HD of creatures (note that this 690 was not divided by 7)
To compare, By the Book, assuming that you guys are all 1st level, that 690 XP would have been unevenly divided by 7. Matter of fact, it wouldn't have even been a full 690 XP (due to the use of turning and sleep). As you can see, the RAW (rules as written) totally shaft the fighters, while giving absolutely unfair advantage to thieves, in terms of XP. This is what I've attempted to fix.
2e was near-perfect, but that Table 34 on page 48 is one of the few areas of the game that needs a "patch", to use a computer gaming term. If you have any further ideas with regards to this, please send.

I like the idea of tweeking the XP system, but I think using the 2e system and the 1e tables really skews the advancement. While Matt is a fantastic role player and uses his thief to great advantage to us all, something seems broken when the class with the lowest advancement track is earning 40-50% more experience per game. To my eye it just doesnt make sense. Whereas the highiest advance tracks, cleric and MU, often get middle or least. I realize that when I switch to thief this will greatly benefit me too, but that's not my point here. Just some food for thought.

I like the idea of tweeking the XP system, but I think using the 2e system and the 1e tables really skews the advancement. I totally agree with you, and I've opened up an entire thread to address this problem. Input from everyone is asked for. As a group, we can always call a vote on any particular rule at any time out-of-game. Gosh Dick made 4th and I only turned up once How do we do Hit Points? A) Remember that one can only advance 1 level per game. (I think that Dick participated in 3 sessions, total). B) For HP, roll twice, and take the best result. Cheers! Pres
