All this Boot Hill stuff got me thinking. I really like the whole genre but like to play using these rules. I'll try and explain why.

Legends is actually a set of skirmish Wargames rules by the guys at Warhammer, or at least their historical division. Four simple soft back rule books allow play from the earliest days of the frontier, the war with Mexico, the Civil and Indian wars and good old fashioned Cowboys. The flexible Warhammer mechanics and stat blocks are used along with just d6's to keep it easy to learn and simple to play. The only other things you'll need mechanically are a deck of playing cards and a silver dollar (though any coin or marker will substitute this adds a bit of flavour). You can, and we do go much further however and it can become as intensive collection wise as you let it be.

The original skirmish game is based around the 'posse' a group of individuals from a certain background. In the first book it details three basic ones. Cowboys Lawmen Outlaws Each gang has a leader and the option to take side kicks and henchmen depending on the nature of the posse. So lawmen have sheriff leaders, the option of deputies and then a number of different townsmen and vigilantes for example. Each type has a $ value which can be added to with equipment. A six shooter for $5 perhaps or a sawed off shot gun for $16, each weapon or piece of equipment will affect that figures abilities. Each side or player starts with $200 and can win more as the game progresses. Experience is added after each game which unlocks benefits making the members, tougher, faster or gaining special skills and hence making it an ideal format for a role playing game too.

The game is turn based. The order decided by the drawing of playing cards. The highest going first (this is not always a good thing). Moves are made and actions taken then any combats resolved. The turn then passes to the other side to do the same. This can be done until one side is dead or fled (called getting out of Dodge in the game) or until certain victory criteria established before the game are met. All survivors have a chance to gain XP and money increasing their effectiveness in the future. There are several scenarios detailed in each book from a simple street shoot out, through cattle rustling, train and bank robbery to injun attacks. These are very easy to write yourself too and I had great fun watching many old Western filems mining for ideas.

The game can look great on the table top. But there's nothing to stop it been played using just pen and paper. Though distances, range and visibility suffer somewhat from this it's easily adaptable. With just a little effort, some balsa wood and a dozen or so Minuatures something really cinamatic can be achieved. Beware though it does become addictive and before you know it you're recreating Custers last stand or the Alamo!

Thanks John (sorry to hear about the death thing). It should be the law that every thread has its own theme tune. Alas I don't know how to post one

I like the idea of a theme tune, thanks.
To post a video clip, it's a simple cut-and-paste.
1) Cut a link from youtube. 2) Click on the "Insert Video" button, which looks like a black rectangle (it's the sixth one from the right at the top). 3) Paste in your youtube link. 4) Voila! You are done.

That filem is high on my agenda. Tried the video link thing and failed miserably. Will try again from my computer when I get home but from an iPhone it doesn't seem so easy
