Noggin capers gruesomely as the birds flap away. Then (as they cost money) he will try and collect any arrows that didn't break or become lost in the bushes. He'll then go and look at Donnerwetter's interesting but smelly hole in the ground.

The adrenaline from the battle ended, Malcazar the Maginificent droops down and picks up his low crush velvet hat, slaps it against his thigh a few times, and places it back on his balding head. There is some blood oozing from a small gash near his forehead which he dabs at.
Seeing the dead bird nearby still smoldering and burning, he walks over to it and kicks at it dejectdedly.
Now staring at the dark rectangular hole in the ground he says. "I hope it's all worth it. Maybe this bastard had some treasure stored down there.."
Noggin can't find any of his stray arrows in the dark forest

"Everyone all right?", Donnerwetter asks while picking up his shield and mace. He peeks into the darkness, trying to see what his infravision can tell him. "I guess I'll take the point when we venture in..."
He gives an appreciative nod towards Noggin. The hobbit seems to be handy with his bow.

Gerin carefully stows a corpse under some rocks.
"Waste not, want not. Those on high help those who help themselves." he mutters.
He gives the black opening in the earth a frown.
"If I was in the habit of collecting tithes from the faithful, I'd bet every coin of it this is where the orcs raid from. I'd also wager they've got a more convenient entrance somewhere."
He scans the nearby treeline, squinting into the darkness.
"Out there somewhere I'm guessing."
He prepares to follow the dwarf.

Noggin will follow then down acting as a rear guard with his bow. Handing a torch out if we need one...

He will also make some attempt to drag bushes, twigs and other undergrowth to cover the entrance from casual observers. Hobbit's are pretty good at outdoor stuff after all.

Noggin & Malcazar have torches lit ablaze as you descend the iron rungs into darkness. Donnerwetter picked up no heat traces and the torch light shows no movement below.
The rungs are slick with mildew making the going slow. The air is noticeably colder as you go down and those with torches can see traces of green moss on the stone walls about you.
Eventually, roughly 40' down the rungs turn to an iron ladder which reaches completely to a stone landing.
As Malcazar and then Noggin arrive with the torches they hold them high and you get a look about you. You now stand in a large octagonal foyer, 30' across. The chamber is paved with white granite and the walls are decorated with (rather tasteless) bright murals of humans hunting magical beats. In the centre of the chamber on a circular plinth stands a life-sized statue of a human male in elaborate robes and adorned with jewelry including a large medallion. He holds one hand palm up and the other thrust forward as if casting a spell.
In the center of the southern wall (across the chamber from you) is an open 10' wide passageway with an ornate archway.
What would you like to do next?

Noggin cheerfully admires the gaudy artwork (he's fond of bright colours). He also takes his torch to within 5' of the circular plinth and have a closer look at the statue. Is it carved from the plinth or attached to it? Are the jewels seperate and real or just carved into the stone? Which direction is the wizard facing? Do the robes have any designs on them?

Emboldened that he hasn't died or been told off by his chums. Noggin will try and spin the statue and the plinth around. If this doesn't work he will tuck his Guy Fawkes hat carefully into his belt and attempt to swing from the wizards outstretched arm to see if it mechanically raises and lowers. By this time if he hasn't been blown up or had his hair set on fire he will go look down the opposite corridor.

"Uldakk I presume." says Gerin giving the statue a suspicious look.
He carefully walks around the statue until he's opposite the hand thrust forward.
"Hmm.....One hand pointed up...." He glances up at the means of their entry into the chamber. "One thrust outwards." His gaze shifts to the ornate archway.
Drawing his warhammer, Gerin walks over to the archway and tries to make out what's beyond. Then he turns his attention to the arch and the walls just alongside.
"I wonder.....Donnerwetter!" he calls over his shoulder. "Any chance that circular plinth can maybe rotate? Or the arms move?"

As Noggin investigtes the statue climbing on it and prodding it etc... Malcazar recounts a tale, "Ah yes Gerin, the statue bears likeness to Uldakk, and based upon his reputation it would be him so vain as to possess a statue of himself. Not well liked was he from what I know. Earned the name 'Underhanded' as he was so aloof and despised that he was exiled from any major City and I suppose that's what brought him here to the edge of civilization. Who knows what diabolical soreceries he was involved in to so blow up his manse."
Noggin surmises the statue to be comprised of bloodwood, and the plinth it is on is separate and made of black granite. The statue points towards the open corridor. No amount of bending or prodding causes the statue to move in any way and it is very dense. The jewels are part of the statue itself.
Gerin walks to the archway and sees a dark corridor. The ceilings are 12' high. The floor is again of white granite and the walls are of unadorned brown stone. Malcazar assists in the investigation shining his torch in, and at the very edge of the torch's radiance - some 30' down is what appears to be a door.
What would you like to do next?

OOC: I'll be in the woods for the weekend, so Donnerwetter will be just hanging about. If combat ensues while I am gone, he'll do his frontline duty as a warriortype.

Sticking flat to the left hand wall Noggin will pad on Hobbity feet towards the dimly illuminated door. Bow and arrow in hand. If he arrives safely he will first inspect then listen at the door.

it is cold and damp in the corridor.
you make it unmolested to the end of the corridor and now stand in front of a stout oaken door reinforced with iron slats. there is a normal looking metal doorknob. you are not sure if it is locked.
what would you like to do next?

Noggin creeps back and pulling his Guy Fawkes hat firmly down around his ears gestures for his heroic companions to do their stuff. He will cover them with his bow and arrow.

Gerin gives the hobbit a sour look.
Then he turns and pokes Donnerwetter.
"Would be best if someone wearing sturdier stuff than a tanned deer hide opened it."
He nods meaningfully at the door.
"Fear not, Thor watches over those of stout heart...." after a thoughtful pause he adds in a mutter: "Providing he isn't out chasing jotuns, fishing for the Midgard Serpent, drinking to excess in Valhalla, chasing Loki across the inside of Ymir's skull....."

Donnerwetter the Dwarf (temporary NPC) ponders the stoutness of the door as he tries the handle to see if it is locked. When he grabs the handle an audible *click* sounds. Immediately afterwards a stone grating noise can be heard coming from the ceiling overhead near the center of the corridor back where Malcazar the Magnificent stands with his torch. He looks up in awe as 3 brass dragonflies fly down from a recessed square opening in the ceiling and fly towards the party. The dragonflies are 1' long with glowing mandibles and glass abdomens.
Next I will roll for surprise, and then combat initiative. What are your actions?
(The door seemed unlocked to the Dwarf as the handle turned)

Gerin curses and goes to take a swipe at the nearest of the brass dragonflies.
"What is it with flying things around this place?" he bellows.
"And for Thor's sake, don't open that door!"

Noggin's jaw drops at the sight of the wonderful brass dragonflies! But noticing their dangerous looking mandibles he will let fly an arrow if he can get a clear shot.

"Streets of Valhalla!" Malcazar exclaims as he steps back warily holding his torch out like a shield.
Surprise rolls: monsters roll 1, party rolls 4. The party is surprised!
The dragonflies swoop down on you. Attack rolls: 1. vs Malcazar, rolls 16, hits for 1 dmg, and there is a burning plasma-like sensation that is eating into Malcazar's shoulder 2. vs Gerin, rolls a 11, misses 3. vs Noggin rolls a 18 , hits for 1 dmg, and there is a burining plasma-like sensation eating into Noggin's stomach
Round 1 initiative: monster's roll 2, party rolls 5
The party attacks 1st, I will roll that out when I get a moment soon..

The party attacks the brass dragonflies:
Noggin w/ bow and arrow, rolls 14, hits! the one that bit him as it flies back, for 3 dmg. It falls from the sky and it's glass abdomen shatters Gerrin swings at one w/ warhammer, rolls 2 misses Donnerwetter enters the fray, rolls 11 (+1 STR)= 12 Hits!, for 7 dmg disabling it Malcazar attacks with a lit torch at the remaining one fluttering about in the corridor, rolls 17 hits, for 4 dmg, melting it and it crashes to the floor.
Malcazar and Noggin each take 1 more dmg from the burning plasma-like liquid. (Malcazar has 1 hp left!)
You are in a corridor with an apparently unlocked door at it's end. The square opening in the ceiling mid-way down remains open. What would you like to do next?

Noggin 4/6HP
Noggin pokes about and collects the bits of brass and glass. Intent on making a whole one later. "Malcazar you don't look very well at all!"

Gerin adopts a sly look.
"I propose we boost the hobbit up onto my soldiers and get him to examine the area the brass dragonflies emerged from. It could very well contain something of value...." he pats his still empty money pouch.
"Then the dwarf had best open that door - since it's caused so much trouble already."
He pauses a moment in thought.
"The door I mean, not Donnerwetter."

Noggin looks delighted at the prospect of been boosted and once his precious bits of glass and brass are safely stowed he will get on the grumpy clerics shoulders and search the area where the amazing dragonflies came from.
