Listening to Black Magic, by Slayer, and just came up with this thread as a spontaneous idea. Inspiration.
(Hopefully, somewhat fantasy related) !!
[In an interview, one of the members of the band mentioned study of the Occult, that being an 'influence' on some of their songs, something like that.]
Spellsongs aren't really a part of AD&D 1st Edition, technically, although, there is the article "Songs Instead Of Spells" in Best of Dragon vol. III. (Basically, for the bard class).
In the 2E eara / FR, there might have been some mention of spellsongs & spellsingers.
Spellsongs are definitely part of MYTHUS, by Gary Gygax. DJ1 Mythus gives the skill (MYTHUS is a skill-based system), and the spell list is in DJ2 Mythus Magick. A lot of younger gamers might not know about MYTHUS. It was what Gary wrote after AD&D, and it was intended to be part of a multi-genre RPG system, DANGEROUS JOURNEYS. Sadly, none of that is available to most of today's gamers, yet, though hopefully we will see full .html versions of both MYTHUS and LEJENDARY ADVENTURES out there on the net, in our lifetime! Definitely, both are an important (and 'suppressed', in the former case) part of RPG history.
As a last note, the magick system of MYTHUS is based on 9 levels, and, is therefore compatible/convertible to AD&D, in the specific sense of Spell Research.
(Although the 'divine magic' of levels 8 and 9 is a bit problematic for 1e -- not a big problem for 2e, as it easily translates to Quest Spells).
The Question: please post anything you think that relates to the general idea of Spellsongs !!
A tuning fork (Dragon 120).
Prespos of Iriaebor
