Yes, it was messy. It expanded the AD&D core in ways that cannot be unseen, but they can be undone, and ignored.
But was it a giant pile, as so many said then, and now?
I say no.
UA contains iconic spells, for one thing, as well as items. The "new" classes were always optional.
While Gary may have over-presented it, I don't believe it was meant to be more than a supplement.
