[Preface: I thought that this might be a good topic for conversation, as it is pretty open-ended. Enjoy!]
T1-4 Friday night campaign
Congratulations to my players for surviving the first 7 sessions. From session 8 onwards, I will introduce rules/ideas/articles from Dragon magazine.
Unless voted against, the following rules will apply:
1) Characters begin at Level 0, with -500 XP. The only thing is that they do not have any class abilities, as of yet.
2) New background options are available.
3) Pain:
At 2 HP, one is -1 to hit/damage/saves
At 1 HP, one is -2 to hit/damage/saves
4) Perception
Roll 5d6 to determine this.
5) Channeling:
Spell casters may channel their hit points in order to increase the casting level of a spell. For example, say you are a 5th level M-U, casting fireball. By expending 1 HP, that fireball becomes a 6d6 fireball, instead of 5d6.
6) Unburied characters may rise as undead.
7) Clerics can attempt to convert, and they gain XP if successful.
8) All characters have a small chance of being a Dreamer.
9) Certain spells (4th level and above) may affect the World Balance.
10) Weapon and armor damage/breakage.
Your weapon has a 50% chance of breaking if you roll a 2.
Magic weapons: subtract 10% for each +.
On a roll of 19. 50% chance of breaking your targets shield, if you are using a weapon. If no shield, a 50% chance of damaging your opponent's armor (reducing it by 1 step).
11) Appraising is a NWP. Without it, you may not know the GP value of gems, jewelry, etc.
12) 'Feats' are available to fighters, for WP slots.
13) Clerics and druids now have access to 0 level spells.
14) Magic items have a 10% chance of having a quirk.
15) Shields now provide a -2 AC armor bonus.
16) Men: +1 STR, +1 INT, -1 WIS, -1 CON
17) Women: +1 WIS, +1 CON, -1 STR, -1 INT
18) Multi-class characters: translate to a single class.
19) Ability improvement: 100 gp + 1 week = +1%
20) Money: Silver standard, as in silver dollar. Gold is more rare.
Example: a beginning fighter starts out with $500-$2000
Questions and Answers
2) What do the backgrounds do? I usually use the secondary profession table in the dmg for background.
The backgrounds don't do much: they mainly focus on the PCs' family. There is also some interesting lore about life in the Middle Ages, in that article.
(Dragon #96)
3) At such low values, not sure of it will come in much. But I like the idea.
Thanks, I was thinking the same. This is a good example of me attempting to summarize an article in Dragon, in just 1 or 2 lines.
(Dragon #118)
4) Is this a new stat or a skill check?
New stat. With regards to 5d6, I should have written: 5d6, take the 3 highest.
(Dragon #133)
5) I might raise the HP cost by level of the spell. IE, burning hands would cost 1hp per increase in damage, while fireball would cost 3 per die.
Thanks, I might work with that.
(Sorry, I can't find the article right now, but I am pretty sure that it is somewhere in the first 40 issues of Dragon).
6) Smells like ghouls to me!
While ghouls(etc.) can 'infect' someone with undeath, the articles actually cover any kind of PC death. The key here is proper burial.
(Dragon #40 and #42.)
7) Always!
8) Similar to psyonics? Or like an orical perhaps?
Kind of like psi, except that it is expressed as a 'split-class', like the OA ninja. Oracles are their own class (I use them for diviners).
(Dragon #132)
10) I like to use the DMG table for item saving throws for this.
The original article did use the item saves. Good idea, I think I will add in saves vs. crushing blow.
(Dragon #74, Best of Dragon Vol. IV)
11) I never tell em the value until they pay for an apprasial or try to sell
That's good. Note that a character with the gemcutter/jeweler skill/proficiency should be able to appraise gems/jewelry.
(I couldn't find the issue for this one; I am guessing that it is somewhere around #105).
14) What kind of quarks? Very interested in this one!
(Another issue I need to track down).
16/17) I wouldn't say that women and men differ in Int and Wiz, but maybe give men strength and women dex? Seems controversial to me haha.
18) So a Fighter-Thief would translate into Assassin? A Fighter-Magic-User a new class?
Fighter-Thief example: This character would need 2000 + 1250 (3250) to reach level 2.
Fighter-Magic-User example: This character would need 2000 + 2500 (4250) to reach level 2.
Technically, an Assassin is a different class than the Fighter-Thief. I have a list of names for the various multi-class combinations.
(This idea came from a Polyhedron magazine).
