Oh yeah! In the days before internet bulletin boards, forums, blogs and social-networking sites, how fans stay connected was through independent publications in the form of "'zines" and "amateur press associations". Back then, 'zines were printed in small numbers with mimeograph machines or Xerox printers, when they became available.
While they where not the best quality with print and layout (if you ever read OD&D or Judges Guild booklets, you know what I'm talking about), they where full of interesting content, like exposés, interviews, essays, poems, short-stories, fan-fiction, artwork, etc. 'Zines cover a wide range of topics that where of interest to their respective creators. Common topics include:
* Art Zines (from fine art to street graffiti)
* Dipzines (Diplomacy or any other play-by-mail war-game)
* Punk Zines (its all about the music, the scene, and the lifestyle)
* Fan Zines (mostly sci-fi, but you can find wide range of books, comics, films & shows)
* Minicomics (mostly underground stuff too out-there for serious publication)
* DIY Zines (how-to guides on making your own 'Zine)
* Feminist and "Riot Grrrl" Zines
* Personal Zines (writing about one's daily life or struggles)
* Gay Zines
* Fetish Zines (they are focused on specific sexual interests, like BDSM, furries, and so on)
* Political Zines (fringe and extreme political movements like anarchism, communism, white-nationalism, etc.)
Here are some good sites to find some old 'zines:
* Archive.org
* The Fanac
* eFanzines.com
