I've been invited to play in a face to face 3.5 game locally starting in March. I have only played once very briefly and only own the 3.0 rule books which I skimmed through last night. Looks very complex. I thought I'd just play a human fighter to keep things simple but even there there's a million optoions. Anyone any advice?

chris107: if you need help with the skills, just ask me over at the Dragonsfoot Lounge. Also, eliana is the 3.5 expert, here. Can you give more details on the setting?

I was glad to hear you had fun with the dwarf fighter so far Chris, and were lucky to boot (3 axe crits to start!)
What I said a while back applies though, after a short while (by L6 in a PH game) you will find some complexity unavoidable. The fighter is NOT the simplest class to play in that game, ones like barbarian are easier. That said, you can just multiclass later on, or else pick up some more complex options, as they aren't THAT complex (EX: power attack= take penalty to hit, and bonus to damage)

Reached 2nd level this week. Rolled a 6 for HP which with Constitution 16 gave a grand total of 22HP, not bad at all. Used the 318GP we had each gained to buy Banded Mail and a large iron shield putting Borin's AC to 19, pretty darn good. Increases in both armourer and weapon smithing to 5's and climbing to 3 polished up his skills and as a feat he chose Power Attack with an eye to Cleave at 3rd and Weapon Spec (Dwarves Axe) at 4th. We also had a bit of luck fighting Quasits, solved some nice poetic puzzles, freed the charmed miners, inherited a share in a Merchant Ship, found the second set of Nerul's standing stones, marauding Kobolds with Dire Wolves and were attacked by something very powerful from the sea which was only driven off following another critical, now maximum power driven and two handed axe strike causing huge damage 3d10+8! Now cruising towards 3000XP if we survive.

cool.
already into the "complex" feats like power attack; I knew you'd be fine with it quickly
