AD&D's version of Hell is mainly based on the European/Christian/Dante conception of Hell. It's interesting to note that other cultures have their own visions of Hell, but that the common theme of suffering and torment is pretty universal.

It's just one of an amazing number of concepts that are near universal, werewolves ish vampire ish, flood tales etc. I feel there was a world spanning culture 10k plus years ago that all of these stem from (Atlantis?)
