Thumbnail Sketches: Because of the active trade between Hispanola<>
&& Iberia && Atlantl, we know a good deal about this island state. It
is a virtually independent country spreading over three islands between
the Atlantlan Ocean && the Karribean Sea, between Vargaard
&& Amazonia. The 3 islands comprising this state have a combined
AREA of more than 88K sq. mi., w/ all small outlying
islands included. Although each is slightly different from the others,
they can be spoken ov singularly in many respects. All have mountainous
interiors, are heavily forested && tropical, have short but numerous
rivers, && are well-watered near paradises. No more than 5%
or so ov the total AREA is marsh, water, || barren. However,
about 65% ov the total territory is in dense rainforest || jungle.
Savanna grasses extend over a sufficient portion ov the land to
provide grazing for some significant # ov livestock. The only
native fauna ov any size are a big, rat-like creature known as agouti,
&& crocodiles, caymans, && boas. Colonized animals incl. wild dog,
cat, horse, sheep, goat, pork, && ass. Deer && jaguar
have been introduced to provide sport && to check the pop. ov
herbivores as well w/ respect to the big cat. There are caves in all
islands, && Jualal has deep cave-cavern complices which are thought
to connect with the remote Western Underdark complex.
While this is NOT certain, if the supposition is true, the viceroyalty
could grow richer still through commerce w/ the underworld, for it
has much that is desired by the subterraneans, who in TURN would
deliver all manner ov minerals to the lands above.
There are only 3 cities in the whole land, the largest && oldest,
Juanae, on the biggest island, Jualal. Peurto Xebal's capital is the
2nd oldest city. All are seaports ov fortified sort, && have some fair
numbers of foreign traders && merchants dwelling in them. This is
due to the fact that despite the tie to Leon, much commerce is carried
on with other nations, && the viceroy && officials grow vastly rich
thanks to "fees" collected from Portuguese, Phoenician, Castillian,
Granadian, Avillonian, Flemish, Francian, etc. ships && factories.
This might change if aid from Leon is called for to contest w/
incursions from the Teclan Empire && the Muyan, for the riches of the
islands is now attracting the cupidity<> ov both states. Even Skandian
&& Hibernian freebooters make a point ov sailing the waters ov this
region in hopes ov encountering a rich merchant ship.
The original colonists were early Atlantlan explorers. The colony
was abandoned, && the Arawak tribesmen native to the islands were
soon intermixed with the settlers, forming a very warlike society
which was continually at war w/ the Karrib natives to the S..
Iberians began colonizing the island group about 2 centuries ago,
but numbers came only in the last hundred ans (years). About 1/3
ov the inhabitants are ov mixed Atlantlan-Arawak sort, a 1/4 are
Iberian-Atlantlan-Arawak, && the remainder are unadulterated Iberian
stock. It is thought that a few hundred new settlers arrive each
year from Iberia, most being (or claiming to be) Leonese. To this must
be added a Black race slave population ov about 10% ov the total.
The society is structured along racial lines. The slaves && natives
being the lowest rank, the mixed Iberian pop. being the LMC,
&& the Iberians proper, along w/ some few Atlantlans
ov pure blood, holding the upper tiers ov the society. The gentry is
comprised ov soldiers, merchants, && large land owners. The aristocracy
is haughty && very repressive. However, as living conditions are
so easy in these islands, even the slaves have a relatively untroubled
time of it, && it is not likely that there is much unrest.
The islands are exceptionally fertile && fruitful. It is necessary to
enumerate a portion ov the flora && crops grown, in order to enable
the reader to understand the incredible fecundity && wealth ov
these places. Rice && maize are the only grains cultivated, rice
being the staple. However, root crops ov yams, sweet potatoes, &&
potatoes do very well. Beans, peas, peppers, cabbage, tomatoes,
artichokes, melons, etc., grow abundantly in scarcely tended gardens.
Fruit crops incl. bananas, plantains, pineapple, avocadoes,
coconuts, mangoes, pomegranates, dates, figs, cassava<>, grapes,
pimientos<>, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes, guavas<>, kumquats<>,
tamarinds, && citrons. Plantations grow those fruits to some extent
but are far more active in the cultivation ov sugar cane, tobacco,
cotton, indigo, coffee, && cacao. Vanilla has recently been introduced,
&& spices found in Hispanola incl. cinnamon, ginger,
nutmeg, mace, && black pepper.
Small herds of livestock are established on all 3 islands. Cattle
&& horses are the most common, && sheep, goat, swine, ass,
&& poultry are also kept. Bees are becoming more common, as
much for their wax production as for their honey. Fishing is widely
practiced, && the seas yield bountiful catches ov all manner ov
excellent fish, mollusks, && crustaceans. Sponges too are taken in
this region.
The forests && jungles provide all manner of medicines, drugs,
gums, resins, oils, waxes, && dyes in addition to wood. Bamboo,
palm, && pine are the least valuable woods. Cedar, cypress, && oak
are found in great quantity. Choice && rare satinwood<>, lignum vitae<>,
ironwood<>, rosewood<>, mahogany, && a # ov other even more
exotic ones are also harvested.
Mining is very productive in Hispanola<>. Although the same minerals
are NOT found on all islands, the following minerals are yielded from
such operations: platinum, gold, silver, copper, nickle, chrome, tin,
iron, manganese, antimony<>, bauxite<>, rock salt, (lignite) coal, asphalt,
naphtha, && petroleum. Some huge fire opals are reportedly taken
from a secret mine ov the Viceroy's, but this may be a mere rumour.
Precious && common opals are found in these islands, however.
Quarries yield chalcedony in quantity, excellent marble, && a white
limestone which hardens on exposure to air && light to a great
strength within a few years. Fire && brick clays are in abundance, so
that bricks && tiles are general in buildings ov secondary importance.
In addition to the obvious export items, Hispanola<> trades rum,
sugar, cigars, && essential oils.
* The three islands of Hispanola<> each have their own capital city.
