Thumbnail Sketches: The territory of Meroe extends over some
250,000 or more sq. mi., running from desert && arid plains in
the N, through fertile prairies, to forests && swamps in the S.
All manner of game is found in the country, ranging from elephants,
rhinoceri, && hippopotami, to small jungle birds. There are lions,
leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wolves, wild dogs, giraffes, buffalo,
hartebeests, other antelopes, zebras, gazelles, warthogs, ostriches,
baboons, crocodiles, cobras, etc., in the woodlands && plains of the
country.
The walled city of Meroe and its environs are filled with temples,
monuments, && scores of small pyramids influenced by the AEgyptians.
It is a very cosmopolitan place despite its remote location, && numbers
of foreigners are found there because of its trade--river && caravan.
The original inhabitants of the N were undoubtedly primitive
Red tribes. These eventually intermixed with some Blacks of Nubian,
AEtheopean, && other stock, && then AEgyptians, Bedouins, &&
other invading Yarban nomads, && Berbers, too. Thus, the typical
inhabitant found in the kingdom today is a tall, brownish-red complexioned
individual, with straight or curly hair of black or dark brown.
The state is a mix of Aegyptian and other Afrikkan cultures, the
government patterning itself on the former, the society being
something between the civilized Pharonic, the AEtheopean, && the
barbaric Darfurian. Much of the state is unexplored--or at least
unmapped!
Many sorts of agricultural products come from this state. Wheat,
durra, millet, && barley are major food crops. So too are peanuts,
beans, lentils, && melons. Sesame, cotton, sugar cane, &&
coffee are cultivated, && fruit of many sorts is raised, incl.
dates, figs, bananas, pomegranates, oranges, limes, peaches,
&& apricots. In the N, the livestock consists primarily of
horses, camels, sheep, && goats; in the south are cattle, asses,
goats, sheep, && poultry.
Minerals found in Meroe are gold, copper, chrome, iron, && salt.
The chief exports are ivory, mahogany, gums, timber, gold, &&
foodstuffs.
