Extra Credits reviewed Durlag's Tower as part of their Dungeon Master's Guide Design Club, going through the first level and explaining why and how it worked. Not only is that a great help for people who want to design computer game dungeons, it might also give some inspiration for PnP dungeons. Baldur's Gate: Durlag's Tower

It took me a while to get into Baldur's Gate, coming from the Gold Box / Unlimited Adventures style of gaming, but, when i got used to the interface, it was a lot of fun.
Note that BG2 did require a patch, or, it would crash (this might be fixed in newer versions of BG2).

The new versions are nice, mainly because they have a zoom function. Although, the jazzed-up BG1 includes all the kits and spells of BG2, which can unbalance the game if you let it.
BG1 was , by some measure, the best of the series, because it's the only one that allows free travel. Every other Infinity Engine game is either narrow choices (BG2) or pure railroad (IWD).
IWD (Icewind Dale) does have a lot going for it, however: there are no premade NPC's, so you are expected to make a full party. It has a lot of atmospheric flavor, great soundtrack, and a lot of spells and items unique to that corner of FR. It's unfortunate they didn't really develop the main town of Kuldahar, which is laughably small, but if you can look past the shortcomings, IWD is a serious dungeon-crawl.
IWD2, uses an early version of 3E rules shoehorned into the Infinity Engine. The result is actually quite good, and of all the games, this one has the most tactically pleasing battles. (Pro tip: in this ruleset, if an Orc Shaman casts "Call Lightning", and dies, THE SPELL IS STILL IN EFFECT - STAND CLEAR!!!!)

The enhanced editions of Baldurs Gate I and Baldurs Gate II (which include the extensions, as far as I understood it), are on sale on Steam at the moment. You can buy them for 5 Euro each (or probably some similar amount in your local currency). They are part of the Halloween sale which lasts till November 1st.
