Hey Guys, Just went on the interweb and within a few minutes had found a 5th edition D&D group that meets only 20 minutes drive from me. Going over tomorrow evening for my first game with them Anyone any tips?

The 5e group didn't show. Disappointing as I'd left a message on their board confirming I'd be driving over. The owner of the FLGS where it's hosted went on to lecture me on the benefits of the new system. "It's great." He says "And at the end of every session the DM certifies your character sheet so that every body knows you haven't been cheating and adding magical items and stuff." I was loosing the will to live by this point and then came the killer for me "There are tables that create your characters personality and lists of names too!" 5e is dead to me

Ugh- sorry that happened to you Chris. Yeah, that's pretty shitty behavior if nobody at all bothered to show up, or inform you it was cancelled or whatever - particularly given you were driving there (hope it wasn't too far) - you'd think the DM, or whoever was organizing the thing would at least bother to try and contact you. Huthor Gamestore/Playing Site Rule #1: Never listen to the guy in charge when they advise you to either: buy this, paint it this way, change this rule, use this edition, or sign here. Most of these people haven't got the first clue. Huthor Gamestore/Playing Site Rule #2: I don't think anyone who isn't a moron gives a shit if some random guy at some random place 'certified' your character sheet. Any DM you play with who you haven't yet joined in on a session with will look your sheet over and go: this is fine, this is fine, this isn't. Regardless of who 'certified' what. At this point in the guy's story, I'd just be nodding my head and going: "Uh-huh, that's great." A for tables generating personality and lists of names - meh. Most games have had that sort of shit since the birth of RPG's. Just ignore it. If anyone demands you use it, it's usually a sign to avoid playing with those sorts of people...............on the other hand though, can sometimes be fun to do it just to have a bash at something absolutely random, or a personality angle that never would have occurred to you. TL;DR Version: These aren't issues with 5E, so don't dismiss it yet This kind of crap happens with every game out there - it's just stupid people. Just need to find yourself a decent group/venue.

it sucks they did not show up, which is uncool. However I am with Huthor here. It sounds like the store owner was talking about organized play, which is fairly common in stores now days and not simply conventions. As such an office sheet would be legal with any org play group or event.
As for the charts, yes there are there under backgrounds but not a must use. They are simply there if you wish to use them or to help with NPC's.

New editions will always have a ton of bandwagon jumpers.
