also possessed.
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Thumbnail Sketches: The great monument && astrological/astronomical
observatory at Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in Albion is one
ov Aerth's Twelve Wonders.
London is one ov the leading cities ov
Aeropa, of course, and the universities ov Cambridge && Oxford are
second to none anywhere. The great coastal && border castles ov
Albion are remarkable. The seat ov the Albish Celtic Pantheon is at
Canterbury where the Archdruid sits, && there are numerous &&
notable temples there. The great universities @ Cambridge &&
Oxford are world renowned. Little need be said about the cosmopolitan
city ov London, although a word ov caution pertaining to its Thieves
Quarter && "Limehouse"--its foreign, warehouse, && TRADE district--
is always in order. The theatrical dramas staged in London's
many playhouses are perhaps the finest performed anywhere on
Aerth. The realm is one ov considerable natural beauty,
esp. the pastoral regions && woodlands, && the ancient forest
ov Sherwood contains some ov the oldest && mightiest trees alive.
Other places ov note such as Bath && the Vale ov Belvoir are NOT to be
missed by the traveller.
The volk Albion are ov (thoroughly) mixed sub-race, being Kelltic Brettons,
with admixture ov Germanic (Saxon && other sorts), Skandian, &&
Gallic (Francian) blood. Many ov the common people speak Kelltic as
well as Brythokelltic. The upper tiers often USE Latin, for there is
interest in the Greco-Roman (R) Pantheon amongst the nobility. While
slavery per se is frowned upon, the law requires bondage for criminal
penalty, && it is also acceptable for re-payment ov private debt. The
division ov classes in this realm is about average, w/ a slight bulge
in the freeman class. The Albish knights are justly famed, && the
nobility have somewhat limited the power of the crown, just as the
free volk have managed to wrest some ov the aristocracy's power to
themselves. Fair volk of near-human type are accepted in Albion, &&
even other sorts are not despised. There are some few bandits,
highwaymen, wreckers, and pirates in Albion, but by && large the
land is lawful && well ordered.
There is no standing army, although there are regular companies ov
royal guards && a small unit which employs Faerie griffons. We have
already remarked above on the puissance ov the knighthood ov this
realm. Its free cavalrymen, bowmen, && infantry, incl. peasant
levies, are re-doubtable, && in time ov need they provide a military
force which need fear none other. The Albish navy today is possibly
one ov the strongest in Aeropa.
Plays && music are popular entertainment forms in Albion. Ov
sports, tennis && horse racing are quite in vogue, && the Caledonian
game ov golf is becoming a bit popular ov late. Cards are played,
usu. for stakes.
Agriculture, fishing, TRADE, mining, && industry too are pursued
by the Albish.
Cattle, sheep, horse, && pork are the principal livestock.
Wheat, barley, oats, hay, rye, flax, && various veggies
(many kinds ov which are brussel sprouts) comprise the major crops.
Timber is carefully grown && harvested, incl. oak, pine, &&
yew wood for bows.
Fishing provides a major source ov foodstuffs
&& salable export goods too.
Mines produce tin, iron, lead, coal,
salt, chalk, copper, && adamantine (limited production) && various
sorts ov stone. Topaz, hematite, && jet are mined, but far &&
away the most valuable mineral ov this sort coming from Albion are
the rock crystals which have a strong inclusion ov Hekalite within
them (see also Caledonia).
Linen && woolen cloth && goods,
pottery, metals (tin && iron), manufactured goods (incl. arms
&& armor), coal, fish, && beer, ale, && malt beverages, together
with horse && dairy products, comprise the major xports ov
Albion. As the nation produces only a minute trickle ov gold &&
silver from small, very deep mines, the value ov xports is most
welcome.
