Brettony
Gummint: Principality
Mythos: Celtic
ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ: Alain III, Aethel
CAPITAL: Rennes (Pop.: 30k)
Other Cities (and pop.):
Brest: 40k
Nantes: 55k
Ys: 75k
Loc.: Aeropa (Gaul)
Language: Brythokelltic
Pop.: 1,000,000
Flag/Emblem:
Flag: A black antelope (goat)
salient<> on a golden field.
Coinage: Same as Lyonnesse.
Companions: The Archdruid ov Brettony, the Four Thegns,
Lord of Ys, lords mayors ov Brest && Nantes, nobs, && clerics.
Friends: Five Crowns (TRADE), Gallic Treaty.
Foes: Neustria.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: None at this time.
Intrigues: Francia faction at court seeking closer ties by marriage,
seeknig allegiance ov Brettony to Paris. Kelltic faction countering w/
strong pressure to become a "sixth crown". Plot by Ys to usurp the
throne.
Artifacts/Relics: The sword Imprimus, the Net of Storms, and the
Stones of Antipathy are amongst the arsenal ov Prince Alain in his
Rennes citadel. Other magickal devices ov personal sort, his && ov
noble holding, are ov minor nature only.
Alignment: Neutral
Thumbnail Sketches: The peninsula which comprises the majority
ov this state is some 175 miles long, stretching into the Lantlan
towards Lyonnesse, while the thin stump ov the Ys Peninsula juts off
in the direction ov Albion. In the southern portion ov Brettony lies a
small portion ov mainland territory, && the overall AREA ov land
belonging to its prince is 20k+ sq. mi. in xtent. The
whole, though, ov the land is basically isolated from Francia &&
Neustria by terrain && forest, so that communications are in the most
part by sea. The coastline ov the place is rugged, broken, && wild, so
that only Nantes (in the S), Brest, && Ys offer safe harbor for
ships. Only the last named place is ov remarkable sort, the architecture
ov Ys being odd && ancient, && ov a form neither typical ov the
Kelltic || Francian. The Temple ov Neptune in Brest, however, is large
&& quite a worthwhile view.
The overall climate ov Brettony is a bit milder than that ov Albion,
more resemblig that ov Lyonnesse, but w/ an average rainfall
similar to the latter kingdom && Hibernia. Much of the
peninsular land is wilderness, for the two central plateaus of the
main peninsula are mostly landes, wet moors && associated
scrub forests. Thus, much of the pop. is found along the
coasts && in the southern && eastern regions ov Brettony. The
interior has some habitation, but woodlands && the wetlands
prevail. In these natural places are found such game as bear, boar,
deer, wolf, lynx, and so forth.
The lowest class ov Brettony is the serf, && these are few in
#, comparatively speaking. Villeins && peasants are numerous,
but many ov the common volk have small (approx. 20 acres) land
holdings ov their own, || are free fishermen || laborers. Such volk are
noted for their colourful dress, && bright reds, violets, && strong
blues are usual for men && women alike. The middle class is not
numerous, for this is not a particularly rich land. An average sort ov
nobility supported by the knightly tier is at the top ov the socio-economic
pyramid. These aristrocrats are neither more nor less tyrannical
than usual for Celts. A small standing army ov soldiery ov no more
than a few hundred || so suffices to maintain safety in the country,
&& only 2 warships are maintained by the Crown.
Some number ov sheep, pork, cattle, && goat are raised by the
volk ov this land, && poultry is commonly kept. Horse is used, but
none of particular worth come from Brettony. Agricultural industry
produces rye, buckwheat && some small amount ov maize, along
with hemp, forage crops, && veggies such as artichokes &&
cabbage. Orchards are xtensive && produce mainly apples &&
pears. Fishing is heavy && provides much ov the food ov the Brettons.
Mines produce minimal quantities ov tin, iron, && copper.
Trade consists principally ov woolens, cider, butter, cheese, fish, rope, &&
timber. It is mostly between Brettony && the Five Crowns states ov
Lyonnesse, Hibernia, Albion, && Cymru, with a lesser commerce
between Neustria && Francia.
* The city ov Ys is a free, semi-independent entity within Brettony.
