WITCHCRAFT SUPPLEMENT FOR DUNGEONS & DRAGONS
Author unknown
The Dragon (issue #5, page 4)
March 1977
Here, we have the first version of the Witch, for D&D.
The class comes complete with new spells and new magic items (including the Locket of Satan!).
(A)D&D versions of the Witch tend to be based on the folkloric archetype of the evil witch.
Of course, real-world witches, at least Wiccans, tend to be quite different.
That said, belief in witchcraft and magic continues to this day: in Africa, every once in a while, someone still gets killed for practicing witchcraft.
Anyway, here's a run-down of the Witch class:
(1) From Aeolia: Witchcraft
"Another Look at Witches and Witchcraft in D&D" Ronald Pehr 20(11) OD&D
Brewing Up a New NPC: The Witch" Bill Muhlhausen, et al 43(7) D&D1
"Witch, The" Bill Muhlhausen 114(8) D&D1
"Witchcraft Supplement for Dungeons & Dragons" Anonymous 5(4) OD&D
Real-world basis
"'Real Witch': A Mixture of Fact and Fantasy, The" Tom Moldvay 43(8) D&D1
(2) Witch (kit): Complete Wizard's Handbook (2e)
(3) Witchcraeft (Knowledge/Skill area in the Mythus game).
Mythus Magick has a full 9 levels of Witch spells, which, in theory, are convertible to AD&D without much effort.
I think that pretty much covers the Witch in the AD&D game, though I would not be surprised if I missed something from the Ravenloft setting.
The Witch is an archetype, and, for that reason, I believe that it is an excellent addition to the game.
My favorite version, so far, is the one in Dragon #114.
Anyway, here are the questions:
Do you use Witches in your campaign?
Any general thoughts on Witches in (A)D&D?
Blessed Be!
Prespos
PS.
Sticklers for realism will note (correctly) that the (A)D&D witch is often a gross misrepresentation of real-world witches.
This is fine with me, as (A)D&D is just a game... things like hobgoblins and kobolds are a far cry from what they are actually are (or, rather, what they were believed to be), too.
PS2.
