Here's one for ya, pres. Dark Tranquillity's cover of My Friend of Misery. I like this rendition much more than the original.

Just about everything by this band is great for RPG inspiration.
In particular if you have a world with a heavy norse element to it.

Urgh, Manowar. Joke bands have their place from time to time, but even for a comedy act Manowar sucks major ass Inspired by your post in the dream thread - I put Seventh Son of the Seventh Son on the turntable.

lol
I don't know - I really don't see them as a joke band, at least not in the same vein as Spinal Tap, or Venom.
I'll certainly say they have taken a sense of image and blown it out as far as it will get without snapping.
But that's part and parcel of metal (probably any genre of music in a lot of areas).
As a guitar player, I can certainly say Man O War has enough technicality to a lot of it, that it is very challenging to play accurately. And the bass playing on a lot of tracks is good enough to beat most 80's players and pretty much all 90's players hands-down (give their version of Flight of the Bumblebee a listen).
As to Iron Maiden, yeah, listened to Seventh Son a few days back. So had the song in mind. Great lyrical concept for the album, and some awesome moments of song writing - too many to mention them all off hand, but oddly enough, I found it one of their lesser inspiring albums.

They have skill, but I just can't handle Manowar. It eases my mind to think of them as an intentional joke band instead of being serious(ish) about all the shit...

I don't know if Manowar is a joke band or not. All I know is they never fail to make me laugh.

Nothing like the classics....
For those of you who may not know (and shame on you!), the singer on this album is Ian Gillan from Deep Purple.
Quoted as having said of his time with Sabbath: "I felt I did some of the best singing of my career on that album, but those lyrics...."

A SMALL VICTORY, by Faith No More.
Posting this in remembrance of the Canadian soldier who was shot dead in Canada, guarding a War Memorial... 1914 to 1918.
All said, I think it really sucks that this happened, that a soldier guarding a War Memorial gets killed in the name of Allah, Islam.
Traditionally, Canada has been a peaceful country, accepting of all people from all around the world.
Is there some way to rise above the hate? I think so.
Presently, Canada is just reacting to a cry for help.
My condolences to the friends and family of Nathan. As well, my condolences to the victims of the Islamic State.
Unless there is international intervention, I fear the rape and murder will continue. To be clear, there are people out there that are begging for help.
I commend Canada for taking some kind of action.
1914-1918.

Could be worse - people might still be worshiping Quetzalcoatl.
Then we'd have hearts being cut out, blood running down pyramids and all sorts of shit.
Now can we get back to music?
Religion and intolerance and the evils of man have no place in a thread devoted to ......oh right.......Slayer.
I withdraw the previous statement.

Been listening to a lot of this lately. For those who don't know - it's the original band of Jason Newstead (Metallica ex-bass player).
He's not in this btw, only seems to be one clip on Youtube that has them all together - and I thought it was pretty crappy.
On the other hand - check out the video below. Something Jason's been doing since quitting Metallica. It's pretty good. I actually like it better than Metallica. Then again, I like pretty much anything better than Metallica.....
