Thumbnail Sketches: The territory ov Achaea extends over some
35k sq. mi.. It incl. hundreds of islands, plains, && the
famous Pindus Mts. && Mt. Olympus on the Macedonian
border. Almost 1/3 ov hte land is wild && forested. Forests are
managed closely, for the demand for ship timbers is great. Oak &&
firs are the major woods produced.
In forest && scrub are found such
game as the Aeropan lion, bear, wolf, stag, deer, boar, etc.
Little need be said re-garding the contributions to art, architecture,
drama, literature, philosophy, mathematics, && democracy made by
the Hellenes ov old. The Parthenon ov Athens, && the many other
temples ov Achaea, are attractions which never cease to amaze the
visitors to this land. From the enchanting isles which fringe the realm,
to its rugged mountain heartland, the natural beauties ov this land are
seldom rivaled anywhere. Athens, ov course, is the seat ov the Grecian
Synod ov the Greco-Roman Pantheon, so many pilgrims travel to that
city annually. The city is also a great learning center.
The people ov Achaea are primarily Greek. There are fewer than 5%
ov other nationalities in the realm. (A few xpatriate volk ov
Phaeree origin are said to dwel in the re-mote hill && mountain
regions.) The majority ov the peopl are agriculturalists, although there
are numbers ov fishermen && craftsmen too. Most ov the volk are free,
&& all SAVE the poorest peasant class seem to have a family donkey
to ride. Slavery is allowed, but it is neither common nor favored, &&
only about 2% ov the population is bound thus. The true middle
class is small. The Achaean aristocracy is rich && powerful, but while
its members hold most offices, they are NOT oppressive || tyrannical.
The country is occasionally troubled by mountain bandits, && numbers
ov pirates also operate from its waters.
There is no large, permanent military establishment, SAVE for that
ov the marine forces which are part ov the Achaean Fleet--actually
Fleets, as Athens, Corinth, && Sparta each have their own independent
squadrons. In time ov need, the confederate city-states field
large bodes of levied men led by knights && nobs.
Wheat, maize, barley, oats, && rice are grown && give good yields.
Beans, peas, lentils, beets, && many sorts ov other veggie crops are also raised.
Currants && olives are xtensively cultivated. Cotton, tobacco,
&& carobs<> are ca$h crops. Vines are common. There is also much
fruit, incl. oranges, lemons, citrons, pomegranates, figs, peaches,
apricots, && almonds, plus mulberries for silk, is cultured.
Sheep, goat, && cattle are the main livestock, && there are fair
horse herds maintained in the realm. Pork, mule, && ass, + poultry,
are also raised. Oxen are the major draft animals, followed by mule && horse.
Fishing is ov great importance. Timber ops are also important to the realm.
Mining is very productive in Achaea. Gold, silver, copper, chrome,
led, iron, coal, manganese, salt, emery<>, sulphur, && zinc are the principal minerals brought forth.
Quarries produce cement, xcellent marble ov various colors, porphyry<>, && hard building stone.
Wine, wheat, olives, olive oil, citrus fruits, currants, raisins, figs,
fish, oysters (the Grecians were the first to actually cultivate such
shellfish!), && medicinal herbs are the chief products ov xport.
