So I was sitting in chat room, saying it'd be cool to start as level 0 mans and have the DM assign the class to the players according to how the player acted. So your character would be a nondescript blank slate and poof! Retroactively an Elf cuz you're fancy. Sounds good, yeah?
Such level 0 gameplay sounds fun to me.

Isn't there some 0 level stuff in the hardback Greyhawk Adventures book? Also a similar idea to yours was mooted in an issue of Imagine Magazine but I can't find my copy at the moment. Nice idea

Nice idea Yes, Chris. As far as I am aware, for AD&D, there are 3 sets of 0-level rules. 1) Dragon, Len Lakofka 2) N4 Treasure Hunt, Aaron Allston 3) Greyhawk Adventures, James Ward Honestly, I think all of them are too complex. For AD&D, I would say: start out at 0 level with no class abilities, at -500 XP. That's it. However, that is neither here nor there, as this is the Classic forum. If you think about it, 0 level characters in Classic are a bit of a problem, as class is not class: it is class and/or race. Pres PS. I am very intrigued by the possibility of another set of 0-level rules in Imagine. I would love to see these, if they exist!

Were I to implement this system, I'd just say the boatwreck survivors were nondescript, with no provision for being a short guy at any convenience, and then once class is assigned they can do the standard 2-1 stat manipulation system. Oh and they were an elf the whole time.

Seems like it was 10 years ago, not 10 hours ago that you posted.
Go for it!
With creativity, I am sure that you can make a good "0-level" system for D&D and/or the Fimbul campaign setting!
