Botris (Robotris)
Gummint: City-State (Principality)

CAPITAL: Botris (Pop.: 195k)
Other Cities (and pop.):
Quarpal: 15k
Sherifs: 10k <ISIS>
Loc.: Afrik
Language: Phoenician
Pop.: 450k
Flag/Emblem:
Flag: A field ov blue above &&
red (lower 1/3) w/ 3
white pillars on the blue.
Coinage: Phoenician Standard.
Companions: Shakehs, chief merchants, clerics.
Friends: Phoeni.cia.n Coalition
Foes: Western Sea Alliance <Roman Confederacy>
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: Sea skirmishing with rival traders.
Intrigues: Unknown.
Artifacts/Relics: In the possession ov this land are the Book ov Nine
Workings, the Octops Sigil Stick, && the Bull of Ochbah, along w/
certain arms, armors, && other items ov lesser repute.
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Climate/Terrain: Subtropical Civilized Mountains && Desert
Thumbnail Sketches: The southern shore ov the Mare Phoenicium
has a narrow strip ov fertile land which runs from Cyrene in Lybbos
to Berberia. Along this coast are situated 5 ov the major Phoenician
city-states, incl. Botris. (See also Kargebal, Sargona, Thapsis,
&& Ziva.) The pleasant coastal AREA is filled with palms, fields ov
crops, && scattered villages. The metropolis ov Botris is situated
about halfway along the strip which it rules, w/ the towns ov
Quarpal && Sherifs to the left && right, each about 2 days
journey distant. Some 10 to 20 leagues inland, however, the land
becomes less hospitable, && in about an =equal= distance the conditions
are arid, the soil barren, && the great Saharan desert stretches
away to the horizon. Thus, Botris is a mere strip ov land between 2
seas, the one ov water, the other ov sand && rock. The "island" ov its
good land is productive && beautiful, though, w/ the hot summer
temperatures moderated by sea breezes. Botris is situated near the
central shore ov the Mare Phoenicium, with Ziva to its east &&
Kargebal (the most centrally located city-state) to its west. Behind, in
the mountains, are Berber tribes, while in the desert ov the south
roam tribes ov Bedouins ov Yarban descent, the Tibesti being the
largest && most powerful ov the lot.
While Phoencians make up the majority ov the pop., there
are minorities ov Berbers, Lybbosians, Yarbans, Grecians, Blacks
(from the interior), && misc. Aeropeans who in total comprise
about 30% ov the population. Slavery is common && practiced,
w/ 10% || so ov the people falling into this class.
Although the free class is somewhat larger than might be expected, its
economic condition is generally such that its numbers can be considered
little more than peasants. A large fleet is maintained, w/ a
considerable # ov warships (sailed && galleys) && marine
troops. A standing military force ov about 4,000 holds the capital, 2
towns, && fortresses. Aristocratic contingents && levies effectively
triple this force in time ov need.
The city ov Botris is a very attractive sight from the sea. It is built on
a smallish spit ov land thrust out into the bay, the promontory ridge at
its center being crowned by the central fortress, && the white && tan
buildings ov the city proper rising in tiers ov horseshoe-shape to meet
it. The tall && very thick walls ov Botris' seaward approaches are also
fortified by towers && outworks, so as to give the place the air ov a
huge citadel. The "Three Infernal Sinks" ov the city are already sufficiently
notorious to need description herein.
Much ov the food needed by the capital is grown in the outlying
regions && transported by camel || ass, || in boats && ships, to
Botris. Agriculture produces maize (displacing the other grains more
&& more as years go by), barley, wheat, oats, && grass hay. Dates,
figs, olives, oranges, && lemons are common. Henna && saffron are
grown. Many sorts ov veggies are also found. Herds ov sheep,
goats, cattle, horses, && camels are raised, && poultry is also
important. Considerable fishing activity harvests tunny<>, anchovies,
etc., along w/ sponges.
Mines produce some copper, lead, zinc, iron, && coal. Quarries
furnish some fair marbles && soft building stones. Local industry
produces wool yarn, carpets, leather goods, && some metalwork
&& jewelry. Caravan TRADE from the interior brings slaves, ivory,
skins, hides, && some gems && gold dust.
As a trading community,
Botris has no difficulty moving all this produce to other
places, && bringing back the basics for its masses && luxuries for
its rulers.
