Noggin, standing precariously on the Cleric's shoulders in the center of the corridor peers into the square opening. A square duct is recessed inside which contains: A medium round brass shield (in excellent condition) An orange potion A small black velvet sack with a drawstring. Inside the pouch are 6 small glittering multi-faceted orange gems

He carefully passes the stuff down, been extra cautious with the interesting looking potion. Then clambers down to examine the shield more closely.

To expedite things , Noggin takes the orange potion, and stashes the gems inside his pack for safe keeps. Gerin takes the shield. It has faint etchings that can be seen under torchlight. They depict otherwordly swirling patterns.
The dwarf bravely opens the door to the next room revealing a large 30' square room that appears to be a study.
'A strange homey chamber with dusty rag-rugs scattered on the floor, faded tapestries hung on the walls, and well worn furniture. Against the east wall is a sturdy oak desk. Against the west wall is a cot, a stout wooden chest and the remains of a large shattered mirror.'

Gerin crosses over to the desk, giving a brief glance at the tapestries - "Information is a lot easier to pass with a single picture than a heavy tome!" as his mentor used to tell him. That of course may have been due to the old goat's own inability to read.
He'll examine the surface to see if it has been touched or possibly used lately, or if it's thick with dust. If there are any papers or other objects of interest, he'll examine them.
If the desk is totally barren on its upper surface, he looks to see if there any drawers.

Noggin stares longingly at the inviting looking bed. However curiosity gets the better of him and he goes to investigate the chest. He is careful not to get blown up, eaten by snakes or be stabbed by poisoned needles.

Gerin investigates the desk, there are books scattered on it, the most notable are a 7 volume set entitled 'Being an Omnibus of the Behaviour and Habits of Wyrms'. There are no drawers.
Noggin sets about to the chest.
He finds no traps on it so he opens it. The chest contains, in addition to many random trinkets; a satchel containing 37sp, 92ep, 85gp and 30 pp. A tiny box is also found carved from slices of an alicorn, its lid decorated with knotwork. Inside the box is a gold ring inlaid around the band with garnet flames and jade leaves.
Malcazar is very interested in the room. He finds a glass beaded curtain which acts as a concealed door in the SE corner of the room. It's beads are all an exact match for the walls.

Gerin decides to pack a few of the more interesting of the books into his backpack.
He frowns as he takes note of the hobbit admiring the ring.
"Don't lose that - it may be magical!" he snaps irritably.
For the time being - since he's currently carrying it - he decides to strap the shield onto his left arm, hefting his war hammer in his right hand.
(OOC: anything unusual noted - like AC shift beyond normal for a typical shield? Noticeable curse suddenly inflicted?).
"Malcazar, perhaps in your current......condition.....you should remove yourself to the door we entered by?"
He nods at Donnerwetter.
"On your word, let's see what's behind this portal. Anything made to avoid detection is bound to have something of interest on the other side."

Gerin somehow figures out that he is now weilding a +2 shield!
Malcazar takes the Cleric's advice and steps away from the slate gray beaded curtain. Donnerwetter bravely sweeps the curtain aside to reveal:
An oddly shaped room, roughly 20' across. 'Floored in granite, the walls paneled in goldenoak, this chamber has a single feature - a low bier in the middle of the floor. On the bier rests the dusty skeletal remains of a human, likely a male with patches of wavy greying hair sticking to the skull. The skeleton is shrouded in a red cloak.
You see no other doors or exits leading out of this room

Malcazar walks about the room with his hands behind his back and breaths deeply of the stale underground air. 'Smells of magicks here..' "I wonder if the dead guy is Uldakk? Hard to tell at this point..he heh" he laughs nervously

Noggin sniffs the air for magic and is disappointed to only smell dead stuff and Donnerwetter. Seized by madness he runs in, grabs the posh red cloak and dashes back to the entrance!

Gerin kneels down (shield held prominently before him) and examines the corpse.
"If it is Uldakk, I pronounce him in greatly ill health...." he mutters.
(If nothing happens on examination of the body, he'll take a look at the bier on which it lies).
He pauses thoughtfully.
"There must be something we're missing here. Malcazar - are you able to discern any direct magical emanations beyond normal?" (ooc: got a detect magic handy?).
Glancing around at the walls of the chamber, a thought occurs to him.
"I think we should examine these walls closer. It may be simple decorative reasoning, but I wonder why these are wood, while the rest are stone?"

Gerin's query to Malcazar is met with a negative nod. He goes to inspect the walls and Malcazar assists.
Meanwhile, Noggin snatches the red swank cloak off the skeletal remains. You see the skeleton is wearing some bling in the form of a large fancy gold meddalion. It rests on the sternum bone and glows.
At that instant - suddenly the Dwarf hears a crashing sound from the other end of the corridor. He alerts the party, "Uh, guys??, guys!"

"What in the name of Valhalla?"
Gerin draws his war hammer and rushes to the exit to see if he can see anything from the doorway. As he peers out the room, he suddenly groans.
"Damn it, I forgot about the medallion! Noggin's probably pulling it off the corpse even now." he mutters in annoyance.
Suddenly wary of possible undead animation from behind, he tries to divide his attention between the exit and the bier.

Gerin's wisdom does him credit. For emboldened by his cloak snatching the hobbits greedy fingers are indeed reaching out for the medallion...

Noggin recognizes the medallion as being the same as the one the statue in the foyer wore as it gleams in his hobbit palm.
The Dwarf peers down the hall and to his shock sees the statue lumbering down the hall moving in a herky jerky fashion, fists clenched. It is halfway down the hall now coming toards you.
No surprise check. Next I will roll initiative. What are your actions?

Gerin advances from the doorway into the corridor beyond.
Keeping an eye out for errant arrows from the hobbit, he sticks to the left-hand side of the wall.
"Thor, if ever I needed a blessing from Asgard, I need it now...." he mutters as he waits for the lumbering brute to close within striking distance.

init roll monster 3, party 3 - simultaneous action!
The Dwarf Donnerwetter meets the creaky statue 10' into the corridor. With Gerin following closely with his warhammer and shield
Uldakk statue tries to strangle the dwarf, rolls 14 hits! for 8 damage , the Dwarf after being choked out falls limp to the cold stone floor - but not without getting a swing of his ax, atk roll 11 - just misses.
Next Noggin's arrow, roll is 16 hits! for 6 damage, a direct strike in the construct's heart. It labors on, Malcazar shoots a beam of raw orange energy from his palm, damage roll 3 and the statue drops to the ground. As Gerin approaches it begins to flicker and morph... turning into a skeleton and then disintegrating into dust in a time lapse of stop-animation.
You now stand in a corridor with a pile of dust and a dead Dwarf.
What are your next actions?
OOC: This pretty much concludes the adventure, nice job! and thanks for playing. I can tell you what the magic items do shortly that you now possess and everyone advances to level 2 that is still alive.
I am up for being a player with Malcazar if Chris107 still wants to DM . It would be nice if we had another player..
